This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.
Running Windows XP 3 .
Thank you.

Some thing strange in your system specs,

Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family, is a intel motherboard
MSI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series, is a AMD motherboard

To get a more accurate list of your system specs, try this program
Speccy - System Information - Free Download

I am sorry - can you elaborate on that? You have gone way beyond my tech abilities. As for as borrowing something - I live in a small rural area and there are not really any techie types around.

To follow up on my last post - I take it you are referring to the power supply. My son has one he took out of a computer that had a dead motherboard. I don't know what wattage it is, or if it will fit. I will have him help me see if it can be installed Monday night. Will let you know what happens. Thank you very much.

Re: computer will not boot except in safe mode or safe mode with networking.

250w power supplies were common pre win xp

with the advent of xp power demand has continued to rise in leaps and bounds

the min we recommend for a pcie system is 80+ quality 550w

your computer is a sff unit

they do not take normal power supplies because the case is to small

higher wattage for your system are not easy to locate and peak at 400w

it may be more viable for a new system

The power supply that is here is a CoolMax 300. We will try it to see if that is the problem, and if so, I will then purchase a replacement one.

Ladysmith, can you be more specific when you say the computer does not start in Safe Mode (or normal Windows mode?).

When you push the power button, does the button light up and do you hear the cooling fan in the back?

Do you see anything on screen, Windows messages, Window logo, etc?

The computer starts and goes all the way to the desktop and then stops. It does not load any icons, or task bar, just the picture on my desktop. It seems to be ok in safe mode and safe with networking mode.
Thank you.

The power supply I have here will not fit. I will need to purchase one. I would like to know for sure that the power supply is the problem.

In my opinion, I would not replace the power supply.

If you can boot into Safe Mode and see your desktop icons etc, your problem is more likely related to a piece of software or driver installed in Windows. Boot into Safe Mode, click your Start button and go to Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore. See if you have a recent Restore Point which you can go back to that is just before the date the problem started.

Boot into Windows normally. Once the computer has booted up as much as it can, press Control+ALT+DELETE. When Task Manager opens up, click File, then New Task Run and type explorer.exe. See if your desktop loads up correctly.

I'd also recommend running the Avast Cleaner program

After that, in either Safe Mode or normal Windows, click the Start button, type CMD in the Run box and press enter. At the command prompt, type SFC /Scannow and press enter. Let the system file checker run. It may prompt you to insert your Windows XP cd at some point.
