[SOLVED] Computer hanging before I can login

Hi TSF

Haven't been here in a while. :sigh:

Well, this is a new one for me. I'm about to run a memtest, but in the mean time, what can you tell me about this problem?

I got a text this morning saying a user's computer was "down".
Turns out it was stuck at the "Applying Computer Settings" screen BEFORE the Ctrl + Alt + Del prompt at startup.

It had been stuck there for about an hour. I forced a shut down, waited, then restarted.

It came up quick and logged in fine. Ran Malwarebytes, it found some stuff, got rid of it and restarted (I have the log saved). I checked the event log before restart and nothing seem to have stood out.

Then it hung in the same spot on startup. Rebooted and it hung on "Preparing Network Connections..."

Forced it off again. Unplugged power and network, waited and restarted (w/o network cable). It skipped past the network connections part and then "froze" at the applying computer settings part (before it was hung up, but the mouse was working and the red-orange ribbon thing was still sliding, this time it was completely stuck).

unplugged/replugged the power and reconnected the network cable and tried AGAIN. It got to the Ctrl + Alt + Del prompt pretty quick but then a BSOD popped up and rebooted automatically (I missed what it said - it was way too quick).

freaked out, I decided to google and see what I could find. Found a few solutions for other people, gathered them up and turned on the problem PC.

This time it started fine. Logged in fine and it seemed normal...
I was able to follow some suggestions from other people's solutions.
1) enable Net Bios over TCP/IP (instead of default)
2)turn off winmgmt, delete %windows%\system32\wbem\repository, then start winmgmt - reboot
3) disable "Network Location Awareness" (I haven't been able to do this one yet)

turned off the computer, restarted and it hun at applying computer settings again... So I let it sit there.
After 10 minutes, I forced it down and restarted.
It zipped to the prompt, then BSOD (I assume the same one... I didn't even get my hands to the keyboard before it just blipped off and the blue screen popped up) and automatically restarted.
it zipped to the pompt again, then BSOD again. I was trying to catch what it said, but it was a large one, not a smaller one.
then the computer came up, zipped to the pormpt, and didn't BSOD. I hit Ctrl + Alt + Del, but it hung there with an hour glass.

After 10 minutes, I forced it down, it went to the prompt again, I hit Crtl Alt Del, but it hung again...

I'm about to head out for lunch and let my brain stew as the Memtest is running, but any ideas you guys may have as a solution would be great. :4-dontkno

I haven't started in Safe Mode yet, and I was gonna check that out when I get back from lunch.

Re: Computer hanging before I can login

You have done everything I would have tried already. This would be the point where I would just put the HDD into another machine and grab the data then ghost that machine and give it back with all the data from before. That is just me though. I hate dealing with those semi-unimportant issues.
Re: Computer hanging before I can login

@aceiii222
That is the next step.

Thankfully, I had already suggested to save all work directly to Server shares or User Folders on the Server, and we've been doing that for months (we have a buffalo hard drive box holding daily server ghosts, and Carbonite running every night, so all his data is safe).

He doesnt have much on there besides fav links to websites he needs to access and the programs he needs.

So far, no errors on the Memtest... I dont feel like letting it run 7 passes, so I'll stop it soon.
Re: Computer hanging before I can login

Hi -

Your HDD could be taking a dump, or it's just faulty in the first place. Try CHKDSK. If you could get us a memory dump, that would be great - try the following attached file.

Re: Computer hanging before I can login

@Undocked Windy

Yea, I was gonna try that as soon as I popped out the HDD, but I forgot that this is a HP Ultra Slim DC7800... uses a 2.5" HDD

Plus I don't have my USB HDD hub to plug it in to my computer to run the CHKDSK
...
I could always just run my computer with the case open and the small HDD on top of the case...:4-dontkno

Re: Computer hanging before I can login

Okay, Safemode (with and w/o networking) worked, and I'm checking for errors now. I also backed up all of his links he needed.

But Memtest came back clean, and i'm scanning for bad sectors of the HDD now... If that comes up clean, what could I be looking at here?

Hi -

Not entirely sure what exactly, but doing the following test could help me determine what it could be and what you need, etc. Please post the results as an attachment - .ZIP, Thanks.

Re: Computer hanging before I can login

Did I mention that this is WinXP Pro SP3?
does that test care which WinOS I'm using?
Re: Computer hanging before I can login

Hi -

I don't believe it will care, but if it does the worst thing that will happen is it won't work and then you delete the test, that's all.

Give it a try.

Re: Computer hanging before I can login

I was trying to install Windows Debugging Tools, but it wouldnt let me on this computer. I assume because it was in safe mode?
And idk if this test is working...

It's doing stuff, but where does the report get saved?
Re: Computer hanging before I can login

Hi -

1) Why are you installing Windows Debugging Tools?

2) The report gets saved in the following :

"C:\Users\%username%\Documents\TSF_Vista_Support"

Re: Computer hanging before I can login

I can use the Windows Debugger tool to read the minidumps to find out what the BSODs were about...

and there's no report for the test...
(and that file path is for Vista, not XP, but its not in the respective XP location either)

Disk Check just finished and it was clear.
Re: Computer hanging before I can login

incase you have already replied, I'm replying again...
It was saved to the desktop, and I have attached the folder as a .zip

Re: Computer hanging before I can login

I got stop code:
BugCheck 1000007E, {c0000005, a8b0b315, ba5035fc, ba5032f8}

Probably caused by : uqdofawsmztz.sys ( uqdofawsmztz+2315 )

according to Windows Debugger Tool
Re: Computer hanging before I can login

Hi -

I'll get TSF's best Debugger in here for you because I have no idea what that is since Google's never even heard of it, it's like it's unknown.

Re: Computer hanging before I can login

The file was in my system32 folder. I've attached it, if that's okay.
Re: Computer hanging before I can login

So, I backed up that sys file, deleted the original, and restarted

booted up fastest I've seen it do in a while. Working fine now. I'm going to restart it and see if it does fine again.

But I need to know what the problem is, or what that file is about.
