Well lets see if I can explain this properly.

I have a computer:

Motherboard: Intel D865 Perl
RAM: 2x256MB DDR400 PC3200 (dual channel)
(other hardware is not important).

I recently recieved another stick of RAM
1x256MB DDR400 PC3200

What I was wondering is this: Which setup would be better?

3x256MB Single Channel (768MB total)
or
2x256MB Dual Channel (512MB total)

Since it's DDR400, not much difference. Go with more ram.

depends on the speed of the cpu


if the cpu is fast enough to out run 3 x 256mb of ram


then 2 x 256 in dual channel would be a shade faster but not a decisive victory for either configuration really

The processor is a P4 3.2Ghz with hyperthreading.

I installed the extra 256 and my games are significantly smoother...I guess I'll just run single channel until I can afford the RAM I want.

well your cpu is certainly fast enough to use more ram


like a matched pair of 512's or two x one gig sticks
