Well lets see if I can explain this properly.

I have a computer:

Motherboard: Intel D865 Perl
RAM: 2x256MB DDR400 PC3200 (dual channel)
(other hardware is not important).

I recently recieved another stick of RAM
1x256MB DDR400 PC3200

What I was wondering is this: Which setup would be better?

3x256MB Single Channel (768MB total)
or
2x256MB Dual Channel (512MB total)

Re: Complicated RAM question, possibly easy answer

depends on the speed of the cpu

if the cpu is fast enough to out run 3 x 256mb of ram

then 2 x 256 in dual channel would be a shade faster but not a decisive victory for either configuration really

Re: Complicated RAM question, possibly easy answer

The processor is a P4 3.2Ghz with hyperthreading.

I installed the extra 256 and my games are significantly smoother...I guess I'll just run single channel until I can afford the RAM I want.

Re: Complicated RAM question, possibly easy answer

well your cpu is certainly fast enough to use more ram

like a matched pair of 512's or two x one gig sticks

enjoy

That's what I was planning on getting when I had the $ for it.
