My CD/DVD drive was working fine this morning, but now it's not working at all. It doesn't show up in My Computer and it doesn't even show up in Device Manager.

I put a CD in the drive and it acts like it is scanning but nothing happens. Now the drive wont even open.

Anyone have any solutions? I've tried running the fix program on Microsoft's site and that doesn't work. I've also tried deleting the Upper and Lower filters and rebooting but that didn't work either.

Re: CD/DVD Drive suddenly not working

1) Click Start > Run

2) Type regedit > click OK

3) On the left hand side locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE & expand it.

4) Locate System > Current Control Set > Control > Class

The whole thing looks like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5) Delete the upper and lower filters

6) Restart your PC.Hope this helps.

Hi littlemoon86, and welcome to TSF.

Can you double check that it is connected correctly. Open up the computer and check all the cables are connected firmly.

Also, check that you have the correct drivers installed. The mat have become corrupted.

Can you post your system specs, make and model of PC.

Re: CD/DVD Drive suddenly not working

Hi, very often the problem is a third party app (like Nero for eg) they place a filter, as you say you have removed them (located where hcltouch said). Optical drives use MS drivers provided by the OS highly unlikely they are the problem (WRP) will repair if needed, or you need to run sfc/scannow.It is a good idea (the Gift) to check the connections as well. Sometimes the third party app replaces the filters at boot. Go to start , all programs, accessories and right click on command prompt select run as administrator at the prompt copy and paste this:-

Code:
 regedit /e C:\Note.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" & start notepad C:\note.txt (press enter)
Copy the notepad outcome here.
