hello,

the title may tell my problem but i'll say it again:
i freshly build a new pc with the following hardware:
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q9550 95w
motherboard: MSI P7N Diamond v1.0
vid card: 2x XFX GTX260 black
ram: Kingston HyperX (KHX8500D2T1K2/4G) each bar is 2 GB with two bars in total
PSU: Corsair TX850w
HDD: Seagate Baracuda 1.5TB (SATA)
case: Antec Nine Hundred two
cpu cooler: Thermaltake MaxOrb
optical drive: a SATA burner

the problem is the following: we installed everything like it should, then we press the on button and wait. then the splash screen comes on with the choices: press tab for POST or press del for BIOS.
we need to change the boot order so we press del. but then nothing happens.

things we hear when we do the above:
one short beep and shortly after that a softer beep-boopbeep.

things we tried in chronological order:
clearing the CMOS (we did this everytime we changed something)
removing the sli bridges
removing the power cables for the second vid card
removing the second vid card
removing one of the two RAM's
removing both RAM's (we got the beep error that there is no RAM, 3 long ones i thought)
removing the audio card that comes with the motherboard
getting a RAM bar from a friend that is on the supported list for the motherboard which did nothing diffrent
removing all other power cables from the fans, hdd, optical drive. (this got rid of the beep-boopbeep)
removing all the vid cards and placing an older 8600gt in.
when we pressed the on button we rapidly pressed delete for about 5 seconds which got us to POST, which said

when we had one Kingston HyperX installed it said:

A7510NMS V1.0 011508

Genuine Intel (R) , Speed: 333x8.5=2831 MHz

DRAM Frequency For DDR2 800 (Single Channel)
Initializing USB Controllers .. Done.
2048MB OK

it says DDR2 800 but the RAM is 1066 and the motherboard should support 1066.

we tried using the del button with one USB keyboard and two PS/2 keyboards
we also tried the above and then wait for 5 minutes to see if the BIOS would show, but it didn't.
we also connected the PSU from my other PC to the motherboard but it still gave the same problem.

pls pls pls help me. thanks in advance for any answers.

Re: Can't get past the motherboard splash screen MSI P7N Diamond

Use just one vid card, go into bios. Make sure settings are correct as
per your system. I would first clear cmos, then do above. Ram may
be at default setting, and hdd's are probably set to raid, which will
have to be disabled unless you are running raid. For 2 of those vid
cards I would have chosen a 1000watt or above psu, the corsair is
very good, but I would have liked a bigger psu. Sata in a non raid
setup will have to be treated as ide, not sata....

Re: Can't get past the motherboard splash screen MSI P7N Diamond

we have tried it with one vid card, but the problem is that when we arrive at the splash screen, we can't go any further. it stays there and no matter how many times i press delete, the BIOS won't open.

there is a clear cmos button on the back of the motherboard and about everytime we changed something in the hardware config we pressed that before trying to boot again.

i couldn't even find how much wattage was needed for those vid cards in sli but on the box it says:
NVIDIA MINIMUM POWER SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS: minimum 550w or greater
XFX RECOMMENDED PSU REQUIREMENTS: non-sli: 630watt sli: 680watt or greater

i have never used a corsair before but there is already one thing about the psu that annoys me a bit and thats there you insert the power cord, the socket can be pulled out almost a half of the way.

Never heard of a clear cmos button. Elaborate on the socket can be pulled out almost a half of the way. Read the manual about how to clear
cmos..If one card requires 550watt, then it make sense that 2 cards
would need twice that...imo

Re: Can't get past the motherboard splash screen MSI P7N Diamond

the only way to clear the cmos is to use the button that is located at the back with the rest of the ports. and i have used the button but there wasn't any change.

Yes, please elaborate on the socket issue. I have the same power supply and socket is no different than any other.

Ok, I see the clr cmos button. You never elaborated on the psu socket
being able to pull out,,,scratching my head on that one.
To clr cmos, Im going on my gut here...unplug the machine, pull the
battery out, the little silver thing that looks like a quarter. Keep it out
for a couple of minutes. Then put it back the same way it came out,
usually the + on top. Then plug it back in. Then press the button. Then
fire up the machine and try to go into bios directly. Then setup bios
as per system specs, but I would use only one video card in a non
sli config...

are you sure its the delete key, might be the f2 key, you have the
manual I do not..

@HD Monkey: what exactly do you mean with the socket issue?

@Manic: i will try that one out since i have my doubts about the reliability of the button. but please if you may have some other suggestions pls feel free to also share them with us so we can try as many as possible when we do another "boot the pc" session.

@HD Monkey:

this is a picture off the socket as it should be

and a picture of how loose it is

No good. Return it for a replacement. There is still a chance it is something else, but that is a bright red flag!

Re: Can't get past the motherboard splash screen MSI P7N Diamond

i think i will just glue it so it stays in place. there is probably just a lame pin that is supposed to keep it in place.

The reason for this is that we had connected a psu from my other pc to the motherboard from my new one and it still wouldn't boot past the splash screen.

Re: Can't get past the motherboard splash screen MSI P7N Diamond

What are the specs of the other psu you tried?

Did you try bench testing your rig? Take the mobo out of the case and put on a piece of cardboard. Install one vid card and one stick of ram. Make sure aux power to mobo is installed. See if you can get into bios.

I still think you should send that psu back. It could be defective in other ways not so easily identifiable.

Re: Can't get past the motherboard splash screen MSI P7N Diamond

Everything is pointing to a power issue. I don't think the 430 watt could power that rig (maybe with just one gpu and 1 stick ram). I recommend returning the corsair for replacement and once you receive it, bench test the rig with just one vid card and one stick of ram with mobo out of case (this is important to ensure that it is not a mobo shorting against a standoff or something).

Re: Can't get past the motherboard splash screen MSI P7N Diamond

We have tried putting a 8600gt in it and just one piece of RAM, no hdd connected, no optical drive connected, no fans (just cpu fan).
With the 430watt psu, but still it froze at the splash screen.

could it also be that the motherboard is defective? it does do the splash screen so i don't think thats the issue.

Re: Can't get past the motherboard splash screen MSI P7N Diamond

whatever is recommended on the box add 50% and you will be in the ballpark for psu requirements

the psu is faulty return it

the 430 don't use it in that system

@dai: the test we did with the 430 watt psu was with the 8600gt which doesn't need that much watt.

i am planning to return the psu and the motherboard to the store.

the reason why i also plan on returning the motherboard is because i think there is something wrong with the bios. it seems like it just doesn't continue with its tests when booting when i press delete rapidly right after pressing the on button it goes to POST and it only shows this:

A7510NMS V1.0 011508

Genuine Intel (R) , Speed: 333x8.5=2831 MHz

DRAM Frequency For DDR2 800 (Single Channel)
Initializing USB Controllers .. Done.
2048MB OK

and nothing more. on my other pc it does the same but it continues doing other checks like checking for IDE and SATA devices. but here it just stops after the memory is OK

but now i have another question:
when we had all the fans, hdd, optical drive connected to the psu the motherboard would do a short beep like always but then it would also do a softer beep-boopbeep, what does this mean?

update: i have brought both the motherboard and the psu back to the store and they were both defective.

i will keep you informed on how this ends.
