[SOLVED] Cannot Shut Down on Occasion Because of an Unknown Program: DritekECWnd.exe

7148 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  kirbyparufo
For a while, my XP (SP3) has had an odd issue. On occasion (I'd say between 10-25% of the time), I cannot shut down my XP without first ending the program DritekECWnd.exe. I cannot find the file via search, and Avast! isn't picking up anything. I searched the registry and deleted an entry by that name. For a while, things seemed to work, but now the problem has returned. What is this file? I cannot find out anything on it through Google or other search engines, and I can't find it on my computer.

EDIT: I cannot find the process in the Task Manager either.

Did you install any new hardware? or games?
Re: Cannot Shut Down on Occasion Because of an Unknown Program: DritekECWnd.exe

No games. I've downloaded a few games which don't require installation, and a few normal programs which do. As for hardware, a cheap keyboard (made by iessentials) and a cheap mouse (made by i-concepts or Sakar, not sure which).

So, does anybody have any idea on what the process is, or at the very least how I could find it?

Are you absolutely sure you have the right name for the file ?
Re: Cannot Shut Down on Occasion Because of an Unknown Program: DritekECWnd.exe

It's the name on the box of the program which needs to be ended manually. That's what I see, at least. :4-dontkno

Google doesn't bring back anything helpful about this file. Its as if it doesn't exist. Found it mentioned on a couple of foreign sites but all the others are sites of a dubious reputation. I think you need to go to the security section.

Please click on the following link to produce the requested logs and start a new thread in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help section, NOT BACK HERE. If you still require assistance AFTER your logs are declared clean please post back here.

Follow the instructions carefully. If you cannot complete any of the steps, go on to the next but don't forget to mention your problem to the analyst.

You will need to be patient as this section is usually very busy but a security analyst will be along to assist you as soon as one is available.

After almost 2 weeks of not seeing the problem occur again, I'm marking this solved for now. I just have a feeling that this was related to either my USB mouse/keyboard (probably the latter) and how I set things up (leaving them in/removing them, etc), possibly a driver issue. Thanks to all who responded.
