[SOLVED] cannot assign drive letter!

for years i have used a slow laptop and i have recently upgraded to a pc. i have a usb mass storage device that i have used with the laptop for years but since installing it on the computer the device does not show up in my computer. i have been searching the net for days and cannot find any soultion. i have tried everything... im going crazy!! i have tried right click on my comp .. manage .. disc management .. and it is detected but when i right click to changer drive letter it wont let me it only says properties and help. the device is listed as healthy (active) but i cannot access it. iv uninstalled .. updated it .. everything! it has alot of cds and vids on there and i dont want to lose them

i would be greatful for any help

woohoo panic over i have found away to fix this problem ...

1. go to start ~ run ~ type regedit and click ok

2. find [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevice1]

3. delete all the dosdevices drives (ie. \dosdevices\C: )

4. go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] and export this to a file which you will remember

5. delete the upperfilter key

6. restart your comp n thats what worked for me
