I popped in the cd, booted from disk, and ran the install. When the cd was loading (blue screen with the windows on the top left corner of screen and loading files scroll on bottom in a black on white bar) everything was normal. The last line being scrolled said, "Setup is starting windows." (Which is normal.) Then I get the BSOD stating,

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:
*** STOP: 0X0000007B (0xFFFFFADFC8E323C0,0xFFFFFFFFC0000034,0x0000000000000000,0x0000000000000000)"

I use avast and thoroughly scanned my entire system, nothing. My computer is fine, I was just reformatting because I am currently running 32-bit, but want to upgrade to x64 (which my system is compatible). I have never received this error in all my years of reformatting. Any idea? Thanks!

Re: BSOD: Windows XP Reformat

Silly question but do you have a 64 bit System to install 64 bit Windows on?
if so I would Delete the partition with a 3rd party utility like a Hiren's boot CD/Partition Magic or Acronis. Then format NTFS with that program. Then boot with the XP CD and try to install again.
