[SOLVED] Boot Delay

2645 Views 23 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Old Rich
Hi all. I am having a pretty long delay when booting up my Dell Inspiron 9400. Had the problem once before and checkdisk/f took care of it. Not this time.

I ran BootVis and the last program to load before the delay is AAWSERVICE.EXE. According to my search this file belongs to Ad Aware from LavaSoft. I no longer run this program and it was removed with the uninstall program.

I looked in the Windows Services area and the file is not listed. I looked into Add/Remove programs and it is not there. There is a directory for it but it is empty (2007 version)

I believe the delay is cause because the computer is expecting this file and it doesn't exist. It finally gives up and continues on with the boot process. How do I make the process of looking for this file stop so it no longer looks for it, especially since I no longer use the program.

Here is the BootVis Graph.

Thanks.

Re: Boot Delay

OK, it's fixed. I didn't do it though. I was looking for the specific issue by searching "windows shell hardware detection slow boot time" and I came across a utility from MS

Download: Autoplay Repair Wizard - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

That is called AutoFix that is suppose to try to repair the auto detect function. Well I downloaded and ran the utility but it stopped me saying I needed to have the shell hardware detection enabled. So I enabled it and rebooted and it booted normally.

The only thing that was a bit different with the boot is a I had a camera memory card in the slot. Sometimes I shut the computer down (hibernate) with the mem card in and then I take the card out while the computer is off. So maybe somehow by booting with the card in there it fixed the issue. Highly unlikely because this was a problem immediately after I cloned the hard drive. Either way, I have rebooted several times with the service enabled and it boots correctly/quickly. So I don't know how it got solved, but it is.

Wish I knew what happened to make it all better.

I hate when you take something apart and put it back together and it works, and you really did nothing other than that.
