[SOLVED] Boot Delay

2647 Views 23 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Old Rich
Hi all. I am having a pretty long delay when booting up my Dell Inspiron 9400. Had the problem once before and checkdisk/f took care of it. Not this time.

I ran BootVis and the last program to load before the delay is AAWSERVICE.EXE. According to my search this file belongs to Ad Aware from LavaSoft. I no longer run this program and it was removed with the uninstall program.

I looked in the Windows Services area and the file is not listed. I looked into Add/Remove programs and it is not there. There is a directory for it but it is empty (2007 version)

I believe the delay is cause because the computer is expecting this file and it doesn't exist. It finally gives up and continues on with the boot process. How do I make the process of looking for this file stop so it no longer looks for it, especially since I no longer use the program.

Here is the BootVis Graph.

Thanks.

Re: Boot Delay

Press the Windows Flag key and R at the same time and type

msconfig

Look in Startup and Services for an entry calling up Adaware . . While in there, you can disable any other applications that are running that you do not need to run at startup
Re: Boot Delay

Might . . I would use revo uninstaller to uninstall it . . let it chase down all the registry entries that the native uninstaller misses.

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems
Re: Boot Delay

That can be a virus . . do a search and see what folder it is in. If it is in c:/Windows, it is nasty and you may be infected. It shuld be in C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem

Do you see it being called up in msconfig startup? How comfortable are you editing the registry?
Re: Boot Delay

Once you create a system restore point ( just in case something goes south ) run regedit and navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Export the key for WMIPRVSE.EXE to a file then delete it and see how things go
Re: Boot Delay

Were any of those places in a run folder?
Re: Boot Delay

Might try disableing it in Services
Re: Boot Delay

Windows Management Instrumentation Provider Service cna be used by a variety of program,s and apps, and could be called up by them . . I would disable it in Services and see if performance is any different
Re: Boot Delay

Does everything run ok with that disabled?

See this for more in Shell Hardware Dection . . Shell Hardware Detection Service

Process Explorer is a handy tool to find out what is calling up services
Re: Boot Delay

That is one purpose of that service . . recognize and use DVD, Flash drives and other removable devices. The delay may have been because it was polling the system for those kinds of devices
