Hi all. I am having a pretty long delay when booting up my Dell Inspiron 9400. Had the problem once before and checkdisk/f took care of it. Not this time.

I ran BootVis and the last program to load before the delay is AAWSERVICE.EXE. According to my search this file belongs to Ad Aware from LavaSoft. I no longer run this program and it was removed with the uninstall program.

I looked in the Windows Services area and the file is not listed. I looked into Add/Remove programs and it is not there. There is a directory for it but it is empty (2007 version)

I believe the delay is cause because the computer is expecting this file and it doesn't exist. It finally gives up and continues on with the boot process. How do I make the process of looking for this file stop so it no longer looks for it, especially since I no longer use the program.

Here is the BootVis Graph.

Thanks.

Re: Boot Delay

Press the Windows Flag key and R at the same time and type

msconfig

Look in Startup and Services for an entry calling up Adaware . . While in there, you can disable any other applications that are running that you do not need to run at startup

Re: Boot Delay

It's not there. And there is a reason. For some reason it was calling up an older log from 2009. Don't know why.

The new log shows that the delay is from the file WMIPRVSE.EXE. It tries a second time to load the file and gets the same delay. Two for one !! ugh.

So, lets try this again please.

Thanks.

Re: Boot Delay

That can be a virus . . do a search and see what folder it is in. If it is in c:/Windows, it is nasty and you may be infected. It shuld be in C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem

Do you see it being called up in msconfig startup? How comfortable are you editing the registry?

Re: Boot Delay

Pretty sure its not a virus

I've played with the registry on occasion, I'm comfortable with it.

It isn't being called up in the Startup file in MSCONFIG

Re: Boot Delay

Once you create a system restore point ( just in case something goes south ) run regedit and navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Export the key for WMIPRVSE.EXE to a file then delete it and see how things go

Default REG_SZ (Value not set)
AOL Fast Start REG_SZ "C:\Program Files\AOL 9.5\AOL.exe"-b
Spybot Teatimer REG_SZ C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

Re: Boot Delay

Windows Management Instrumentation Provider Service cna be used by a variety of program,s and apps, and could be called up by them . . I would disable it in Services and see if performance is any different

Re: Boot Delay

Sorry for the delay Rich. I've been playing around with the computer. I went into the startup and disabled everything. Of course after boot zone alarm re-enabled itself. Still a delay

Then I disabled from the services list

Windows Management Instrumentation

Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions

WMI Performance Adaptor

After deactivating these three the program doesn't show up on bootvis. The delay still remains for the same amount of time. The last program loaded before the delay now is

SVCHOST.EXE

I don't know how to deactivate that one though.

Re: Boot Delay

OK, I found the issue. Now I hope you can tell me why this is happening or what I can/need to do to resolve the issue.

I used the MSCONFIG SERVICES. I deactivated all the services, a few couldn't because they are essential. I added 10 services and booted. I finally hit the problem and went back 9 services and then added 1 at each boot until the problem occurred.

It was this:

Shell Hardware Detection

that caused the long delay. I reactivated everything else and rebooted and it booted normal and fast with no delay.

Soooooooo... What is this process that I have deactivated and what does it do and do I need to have it activated?

Thanks for your time Rich, you may not have solved it but you sent me in the right direction and on the right path.:thumb::thumb:

Re: Boot Delay

Well, so far it does. Of course when I install my camera memory card it no longer brings up the program that lets me download off of it, but I never used it anyway. It also doesn't name the memory card what it use to, now it is just Drive E:\, again, not a big deal.

Do you know what file is associated with that service? Maybe it got corrupted when I did a clone of my disk. My other disk didn't have this problem.

Re: Boot Delay

That is one purpose of that service . . recognize and use DVD, Flash drives and other removable devices. The delay may have been because it was polling the system for those kinds of devices
