I have a huge problem. Last night, I was helping an elderly person unjunk their computer with remote access. I started uninstalling oh .. maybe 50 items of junkware. Probably, my mistake was using REVO UNINSTALLER .. but I have never had a problem with it .. so that is what I used.
She is running W7-64.
I got to some YAHOO junk ... toolbar, updater .. a couple of other things and on uninstalling one of them (don't actually remember which), the uninstall seemed to hang. After a long wait, it seemed that Revo and the uninstall routine had stopped responding .. I had to kill Revo in the middle of the routine. I know that Revo cleans up a registry after uninstalling programs.
I scheduled chkdsk /f on a reboot and the result is that IE8 32 bit had disappeared. No links/icons/menu items to it to be found. I ran IE8-64 which ran OK but after the first close .. IT DISAPPEARED!! I start to panic. This lady now has no browser.
I went to MS UPDATE and installed IE9-64. I now have two IE icons .. one for 9-64 and one for 9-32. 64 opens and runs (fine), 32 click does nothing. Nothing at all.
Both the icons link to (an) iexplore.exe .. there are IE files on the hard disk for 32 and 64 .. but 32 does not run .. even when clicking on its executive file. It is like it is not registered in the registry. I could be wrong .. not a registry expert .. but that is sort of what I expect.
I put her on IE9-64 .. for the time being ... as that is all that will run. Now .. I am trying to figure out what to do next. Restore to an earlier date? Install FF? Would appreciate any wisdom on this problem. Thank you in advance.
