Hi guys n dolls,

I need a wee bit of advice regards the ext filesystems. I have a 320gb external hdd i'm formatting and plan to use for all the usual stuff but it's also practically gonna be a second hdd to my pc also. So what i'm seeking is some help on deciding what ext filesystem i should use and what are the key difference's between ext2, 3 and 4. By the looks of what i was able to get is that ext and 3 are more or less the same but ext4 has more advantages? and i think i read that ext2 can't be written to as many times as the other's? and one more thing, does the ps3 still support these filesystems?

Thanks much appreciated,

Re: Advice on the ext filesystems

Hi Steve,

First let me say that if you plan on connecting this external hdd to a windows computer at any time in the future that you are best leaving it as a FAT32 or NTFS hard. Since as I am sure you know ext2,3,4 hdds aren't recognized by windows.

For a basic break down of the differences have a look at Linux File Systems: Ext2 vs Ext3 vs Ext4.

Cheers!

Re: Advice on the ext filesystems

Hi wmorri,

Thanks for the info in the link, thats exactly what i was looking for, just plain simple points on the filesystems. I probably will end up using it on a windows pc at some point now that i'm thinking about it because of the music in it (i like to think i have an awesome collection :p ) so i will probably format it to fat32, least that way i know it should be compatible with the ps3 as well.

Thanks again for the info though, at least i know a bit more about ext now.

Re: Advice on the ext filesystems

Hi

it was in ntfs format due to the fact it was an ex laptop hdd, but now that i made the full switch to linux barr testing windows 8, it was good to know what people thought was recommended, but yeah fat32 is the way to go at the moment because of the possibility of playing music on a ps3.

again thanks for the advice guys
