SmitFraud and other malware

Hello! As you could guess, I'm having some issues with my computer and would really appriciate some help. Yesterday, the SmitFraud virus got onto my computer. After hours of trying to figure out what was wrong, I think I fixed that problem in a way different than the downloadable Fix. I noticed an unknown registry in the startup menu and fully deleted that entry (dumprep 0 -k). Afterwards the taskbar icon never came up again and the Fix came up with nothing, leading me to believe that particular virus is destroyed.

I still have issues, though. Both before and after I destroyed the virus (but not before it got onto my computer), I haven't been able to access Google and most of the virus-scanner websites listed on the "Please, Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log" thread. It seems I have some other malware, as IE was also affected; in addition to the website issues, it had locked me out of changing my homepage. After I (hopefully) destroyed SmitFraud, I ran Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, McAfee, CWShedder and manually went through RegCleaner. It helped with changing the homepage, but I still have trouble accessing sites. I also have trouble booting into safe mode, but I'm not sure if this is my computer (it's always been touchy and it had worked yesterday) or another side-effect of the malware. I can get into the selection page, but my computer always locks up during loading safe mode. Normal mode boots up fine, though it feels the need to do a consistancy check every time on my G: drive.

I ran HijackThis, coming up with:

Thanks for the reply. For an update: I found out why Google and other websites weren't working. The virus invaded my hosts file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc). Fixed that, but it seems like I have a corrupted file on my G: drive. Is there a way to fix that?

Hi,

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click OK.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Delete the following files:

C:\ibiocpq.exe
C:\qbsoqyl.exe

**If any of the above resist deletion, boot into Safe Mode to delete.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

What file is corrupted on your G: drive?

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I also think it would be prudent to run an online scan to search for remnants:

Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        [*]Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

I'm not sure which file on my G: drive is corrupted. There's a folder of .CHK files I'm not sure what they are. The reason I suspect one is corrupted is because of the consistancy check that Windows wants to run at start-up. When I do the scan, it deletes a folder that it says is unreadable (when it is readable), and does it all over again upon the next start-up. Besides the .CHK files, the only thing on the drive is .mp3s and a few .nfo files.

Hi,

The possible corrupted file does not sound malware related. You'd be better served discussing that issue in the Windows XP forum.

I realize you've already fixed Smitfraud your way, and I do not see any indication of active entries in the logs you've provided but I'd like you to take one more step that is important in removing this infection:

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

----------------------------------------------------

Other than the G: drive issue, how is your system behaving?

Well, it seems a little slower than normal, but overall it's a lot better than it was at the start of the thread. Should I be concerned about the two viruses Kaspersky found? McAfee found a trojan when it was scanning, the TIBS trojan, but I couldn't tell you which directory it was in. Other than that, I think my system is mostly back to normal. The other issues I have are XP-based, I think, not malware based. I plan to post there once my computer is fully clean.

Kaspersky was alerting to the presence of the SmitfraudFix tool that we had used.

It is important to know where McAfee found TIBS trojan. I'm assuming it cleaned that 'find'--can you check your McAfee reports and see if you can find the location of that infection?

I'm really sorry for the extreme wait. It's been a little busy around here.

This may sound like a stupid question, but I can't find the McAfee logs/reports anywhere. Where do I find them?

I personally don't use McAfee, but generall AV programs have a Quarantine folder or some such. If you cannot find a Quarantine folder, please tell me what version of McAfee you have.

I know where the Quarantine folder is, but there's nothing in there. McAfee fully deleted the trojan.

Ok then--if McAfee hasn't found anything since, I'd say you're good to go. :sayyes:

Reset hidden/system files and folders
Windows XP
===============
Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
* Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
* Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Enable Windows Auto Update
*Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
*Tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will prevent any reinfection from previous restore points.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

McAfee Site Advisor--free version. The folks there check out websites and based on their findings, rate it as Safe, Unknown, Caution, or Bad.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.

Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.

IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
  • Now navigate to C:\ie-spyad. Double click to open it.
  • From within the folder, double-click install.bat
  • Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
  • Then return to the main menu.
  • Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER
Understanding and Using Firewalls

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Follow this list and your potential for becoming infected will reduce dramatically.
