I have a really old laptop (Compaq Presario 1500US), which has a 2ghz P4 CPU, 734mb ram (originally 256 with a 512mb upgrade), and a 30gb drive.

Recently, I have been experiencing some issues related to slowdowns of the OS. Sometimes, it will freeze at idle, other times under load. It has also started to take much longer to boot (It used to take ~90 seconds and now takes about 3-4 minutes.

It also takes much longer to load applications, and perform file transfers.

I recently had some hard drive issues, and think the old drive I have in this computer is reaching the end of its life. It's a Toshiba MK2031GAS, and is about 10 years old.

Are these issues consistent with hard drive failure, or is there a possibility of a malware infection or other issues?
