I've got Windows Vista. When I connect my SimpleTech 320gb it is only recognized as a Usb 1.1 device and gives me that message saying it would work faster connected to a usb 2.0 port (Which it already is). This started happening after about 6 months of working fine after my initial buy.

It eventually works connects and works at proper speed after numerous tries at unplugging and replugging back in.

I've tried using the device manager to uninstall the device and let the laptop reinstall it. That worked for a couple of uses then same old problem came back. It comes with a dual usb cable so it's not a power issue. I really would appreciate any help anybody could give. Thanks.

Do other USB devices work at the proper speed?
Check the USB Controller in Device Manager to see if there is a (?) question mark shown for each installed USB device (Start>> Right click My Computer>> Manage>> Device Manager). If a question mark is shown, right click each device, select Update Driver.

If everything looks fine in Device Manager, try updating your Motherboard to the latest "Chipset" driver.

Thanks for your suggestion oldjoe but no, other usb devices work normally when connected. My problem is specific to my ext hard drive. Also, there is no question mark under usb devices in the device manager. It shows up normally as 'Mass Storage Device'.
