silverlight update

My computer is trying to install an update to silverlight and never completes the task. It has downloaded the update and wants to install it upon system shutdown. It is there every day and is showing up in the updates are available pop up. Even if I tell it to ignore the update it will still try to install it. I tried to remove silverlight from the program list, but it won't let me (icon is grayed out like it is not completely installed) How can I get rid of it? I am running XP pro and Panda interent security 2008.

You will need it for some applications and online stuff. If you still want to uninstall it, remember some things will not work without it.

I don't want to uninstall it. It is hung up in the update mode. The update has downloaded to my computer but won't finish the update. It also still shows up in the updates available list. It has been doing this for 3-4 weeks. Any ideas on how to get it to complete the update?

So, you're trying to do the update through windows update then? If that's the case, are you sure it's not a problem with WU and not silverlight? (Basically are your other updates installing ok?) WU can be reinstalled if it's the problem.

What's the update for? If it's the new build, you could try to download the whole thing from the link on this site.

The site also mentions an auto-update mechanism. Perhaps you could turn that on?

WU is working fine for everything else. Tried to download the new build from the website and it failed because of previous version on system. Tried to remove Silverlight from add/remove programs list and it fails because it can not find source file. Is there another way to remove the program from the laptop? It looks like the first update install atempt failed--but left enough in place to keep it from finishing the install.

Try the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

Apparently there's no way to force it to install over itself, so the only way is to somehow get it removed.

You can try to uninstall the update ("show updates") instead of the program under add/remove. See if you can find its number.. (KB949325 is one that's being tossed around - so if that's there you can try to uninstall it).

If nothing is there, perhaps the install didn't get far enough and you can fix it by removing it out of Windows Update. First stop the service with Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services : Automatic Updates (highlight and 'Stop'). Then move the information in this folder to a temp spot: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download. Then restart the service and restart the computer. The files there obviously aren't working, and although removing them won't undo anything.. it's not like the update isn't already broken. Plus you can always put them back. But if the installation process is what's locking out silverlight in add/remove, then stopping it may give you access to the program again. At least that's my theory.. (Granted, it's probably a long shot)

Anyway, you're aiming to uninstall Silverlight completely and do a fresh install of the newer version.

If none of that helps, you can post on the Silverlight forums & see if they can offer any more advice.

I can't think of anything else to try besides a system restore or going around deleting files hoping that it will let you install the program again.
