Hello,
I am using XP SP2 32bit.
Shutdown is very slow taking more than 3 minutes.
Also the shutdown window does not appear when i click turn off computer from the start menu.

So temporarily i have created a shortcut %windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0 for shutdown. But that doesn't solve the slow shutdown problem.

Both the problems mentioned above do not occur if i shutdown within some time interval from startup(about 10-15 minutes).

It is probably not a virus issue since i scanned my pc by malwarebytes, bitdefender 2010 and spybot.

I also installed Microsoft UPH clean service. But it does not show any message at shutdown.

Please help !!

Hello and Welcome to TSF!

I think there is got to be some application or service running in background and it is shutting down very slowly...
Since when this started to happen???
Can you remember did you install some application right before this started to happen???

I would suggest you try sfc /scannow for now...
Insert Windows XP CD, go
START > RUN... > type SFC /SCANNOW and hit Enter...

After this restart PC...

Also check under System Services if you have some kind of service unknown to you up and running...

Keep us posted...

The shutdown problems started about 3 months ago. I remember that i had installed Voice insert SDK, bitdefender total security 2010 that time. I uninstalled both of them but still the problems remain. I may have installed other apps but i don't remember them.

Unfortunately I don't have the Windows XP CD. Will downloading an iso image of the CD work?

There are many services running (automatic) at startup.
Instead of services i just checked the processes running at startup at processlibrary.com
Only wdfmgr.exe was not a critical component. I have disabled it but shutdown problems still exist.

One more thing:
When i click turn off computer from start menu the shutdown window does not appear.
The only thing i can do that time is open task manager.
If i want to turn off then i can click shutdown-->turn off
If i don't want to turn off i have to end explorer.exe and then click
File-->New task(Run..)-->explorer.exe to continue my work.

So maybe there is some problem with explorer.exe. Also the mouse icon remains at the time of shutdown.

I am attaching a screenshot of the processes running at startup:-

I have already downloaded .nrg file(639 MB) of XP SP2 from a different link.
Now how can i make a bootable copy of Windows XP?

Does the scan run at boot time?
If not then can i mount it on a virtual drive and run the scan?

Hello!

.nrg is Nero image type of file and it can be read by variety of other software like Alcohol 120%, Power ISO etc.
You can make a bootable CD or you can run this image file via virtual drive.
But, I must admit that I have never tried to run sfc /scannow with virtual CD :1angel:
You try and let us know hehe

when you run sfc /scannow, you should see little window which said that windows is performing system file scan...

After it completes, you restart PC and check if your PC is shutting down properly.

Hi, Kunal Shah

As vladimirb stated have you tried open the start menu, click run and typing "SFC /SCANNOW" in the run windows.

By default SCANNOW is installed with XP SP2.

The biggest issue here is

"the shutdown window does not appear when i click turn off computer from the start menu"

If you restart the PC in safe mode to access safe mode moment after the PC display is shown (when the PC is loading) press F8, are you able access the shutdown window ?

The slow shut-down is most likely caused by a crammed PC, try these basic step first.

Disk Clean-Up ( Right-clicking on of your drives and selecting properties, Disk clean up)

Disk fragmentation ( Right-clicking on of your drives and selecting properties, Tools tab Defragment Now)

Clean Windows Registry (Registry First Aid 7.0 Download here)

1) I tried running SFC /SCANNOW but it showed the error:-
'Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.
Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now.`

I mounted the downloaded .nrg file on a virtual drive(Daemon tools) and then ran the scan, it worked !!
It took a while to finish (Windows file Protection) but no message was shown after it finished. Also shutdown problems were not solved.

2)The shutdown window only appears if i shutdown within 15-20 minutes from startup.(Normal mode) Even if let the CPU idle for more than 20 minutes without opening any application, still the shutdown problems occur.

There are no problems in Safe mode.

3) Disk Cleanup i do daily so no problem there.

4)Disk defragmentation i did one and half months ago but the shutdown problems refused to go away.
I did it again yesterday but no luck.

5) I am using registry cleaner from Bitdefender total security 2010. I use it once a month. I ran it yesterday, it detected about 12 invalid entries which were deleted.

After that i downloaded and installed Registry First Aid 7.0. It detected exactly 1000 invalid entries. But it was an unregistered version, so only 11 entires could be solved.
Besides i am scared of running 3rd party registry cleaners because i have read that sometimes they can do more harm than solve problems or increase performance.

6)I forgot to mention that before Windows XP is started an error shows up:-
Invalid BOOT.INI
Booting from C:\Windows

But this error is since the last time i formatted my pc(one and a half years ago).

Hello

I never trust 3rd party registry software applications because they usually want to take money from you :upset:

So, SFC /SCANNOW did not help. OK, now I would advise you to burn that .nrg Windows XP CD on to CD so it will become bootable and do a System Repair.
Remember, this procedure can be only done after you restart PC, so you must make bootable version of Windows XP CD...
And you MUST use your own serial key during system repair, not any other serial because that would be ILEGAL

Here you have instructions how to perform a System Repair:

Windows XP System Repair

Did you try to disable BitDefender services???
Anti-virus software could delay shutting down sometimes because it does so much stuff in background and we are not aware of it...

And also I must ask: Did you scan your system with AV software lately???
maybe it is some kind of virus which is hidden in the background...

Keep us posted mate...

Hello,
Sorry for the late reply... was out of town

I disabled bitdefender services (through safe mode) but that did not help.
Earlier i had uninstalled bitdefender 2010 completely but shutdown problems weren't solved. So probably bitdefender isn't the cause of it.

I scanned my PC again by bitdefender,MBAM no problems found.

I am a little hesitant to do XP repair as of now because i haven't done XP repair/install before. I will repair under some friend or engineer who has done it before.

By the way, Happy New Year 2010 !!
