"Show Desktop" Shortcut Gone!!!!!!

9659 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  MisterTransisto
Hi,

I "accidentally":angel: deleted the "SHOW DESKTOP" Shortcut that is usually in the Launchbar at the bottom, beside the Start Menu. I can't figure out how to get it back! I tried looking in some folders to see if there is another shortcut, but can't find it!

Can Someone please tell me How I can get this shortcut bar back?

Thanks,

Put your mouse over by the clock and right click > goto tool bars at the top and select "quick launch" from the choices displayed.

:doh: I see now I was not paying attention ... whoops :)

Ok just create another shortcut, the file for the shortcut should be

\documents and settings\whatever your logged in as\Desktop\Show Desktop.scf

it may also be other places, if you have multiple accounts ... General search should find it.

You need to go to folder options and enable show hidden files and folders.

Then do a search for Desktop. Create a shortcut of the icon on the desktop.

Then do a search for Quick Launch. Open the Quick Launch folder and drag and drop the Desktop Icon into it.
Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Ok, First of all, the link
\documents and settings\whatever your logged in as\Desktop\Show Desktop.scf
That "The Tech Is In" gave me, is basically pointed to the deskop. You are basically saying to go to the desktop, and go tot he file "Desktop.scf", the only problem is there is no file on the desktop with that name. I think the original "Show Desktop Icon" was under Application Data, But I coudn't find it there either.

Secondly, Speedo, I don't want to just creatre a shortcut to the desktop folder, because I already have that link, I want the link that "SHOWS DESKTOP", meaning it minimizes all windows, and didplays the desktop, what you've told me is to make a shortcut to the desktop folder. Plus, I allready searched for desktop, hoping that I would find a copy of the shortcut, but I coudn't.........

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

OK, DJ Specs to the rescue!
Follow these instructions:

To re-create the Show Desktop icon on the Quick Launch toolbar, follow these steps:
Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to create a file with the following lines:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Save the new file as a file named Show Desktop.scf in the Windows\System or Winnt\System32 folder. Note that Notepad may automatically append a .txt extension to the file name. Remove this extension if Notepad adds it. These steps do not work if the file is named Show Desktop.scf.txt.

Quit Notepad.

Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click the Show Desktop .scf file, and then click Create Shortcut.

Copy the new shortcut to the appropriate folder. In Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98, copy the shortcut to this folder:
Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

In Microsoft Windows NT or Microsoft Windows 2000, copy the shortcut to this folder:
Winnt\System32

Rename the shortcut to Desktop.

The Show Desktop icon automatically appears on the Quick Launch toolbar.

Quick launch toolbar in NT

Hey guys

All this info on how to add the desktop shortcut to the quick launch toolbar is great, but I don't appear to even have a quick launch toolbar in NT! Have seen a few forums sayiny to right click on the task bar and select the toolbars option - but there isn't one on mine.....

Running NT 4.0 with I.E. 5.5. Any ideas?

Cheers
