Should (or can) I upgrade my 10 y.o. Gateway 500C?

Thanks for considering helping me.

I have a Gateway 500C.

I have two concerns.

1. I don't know if I should upgrade. The computer makes weird noises sometimes (a loud, short processing kind of sound ((that started one day when something fell on top of the computer)) and the other day it didn't start (I think it had a memory failure so I removed and put back in the memory card). It's running now, but the sound still happens on occasion.

2. If I should upgrade, I don't know how to tell what (CPU, video card, RAM, HDD) goes with my motherboard (an Intel El Paso 2 or if I should even get a new motherboard.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You know what? I just read the motherboard only works with a pentium 4 and I need to get at least a dual core so I'm just going to have to get a new motherboard and everything (most likely from the recommended build thread).
Scratch that. I am going to keep the motherboard and CPU but can someone please tell me how to tell what RAM and video cards with my motherboard?
It came with a 64MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX400 AGP Video Card w/ DVI and TV Out

An AGP card will be hard to find.

It came with 256 MB of DDR 266 ( PC 2100 ) memory, you can use the configuration tool at www.crucial.com to see what you can add.

What do you intend to use this system for? . .
A few games (not new games, of course.) It's only a 1.5 ghz system.

So the AGP cards I need are 1.0 cards and that's what makes the hard to find?

Thank you for your reply.
But something's wrong with this computer... it is making that loud, short "processing" kind of noise more frequently...
It's a 4x AGP slot > http://gd.panam.acer.com/s/MOTHERBD/INTEL/2515568/251556827.shtml

But today you'll find 4x/8x cards that are supposed to work on either, most of the time they do but since all newer cards are designed as PCIe cards and ported to the AGP spec results do vary greatly. I would not spend a lot of money on the system, motherboards and power supplies of that vintage did suffer from a lot of capacitor failures, and any components you purchase for it will not move forward to a newer system.

Yeah... the monitor refresh rate keeps on dropping by itself, too.

I don't know... something's messing up.

I'm going to get a new system soon.

Thank you for your help.
