All right you guys! I ran a sfc /scannow on XP SP2 Home to hopefully clear up a minor problem or two. But, I am not sure scannow actually worked and here is why; While running sfc /scannow, in the Windows File Protection box , a window pops up saying "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows Home Ed CD-ROM now." Below that I can choose "Retry, More Info, Cancel" When I click "More Info" this message appears; "Possible reasons for this problem: a) Inserted wrong CD, and b) CD-ROM drive is not functioning". OK, first , before the above window popped up, the progress bar was advancing. Next, I inserted my Registered copy of XP Home and the CD-ROM is working. So, I have to click "Retry" and the window immediately pops up again. Clicking "Retry" again closes the Info window and the progress bar advances for awhile until the window pops up again. I do this same scenario nine times until the progress bar finally reaches the end in an hour or so, at which time the WFP box closes with no fanfare at all. Also, as the progress bar advances, I notice the HDD & CD-ROM indicators flicker as would normally occur during installations. I have no idea if this was a successful scan or no, or if any need DLL were added, etc. Is this normal? How can I check it out? The problems I was hoping to eliminate still exist, but they are minor.

The version of XP you have on CD, is this also SP2, or did you install SP2 at a later date? If the CD is XP original or XP with SP1, you'll need to make a new CD with SP2 included on it; this is called 'Slipstreaming'.

A good tool for doing this is nLite - there are instructions on how to use it on the website.

When I purchased this computer I receivred the OEM disk with SP1. About a month ago I purchased the XP Home (upgrade) and installed it over the XP OEM as an upgrade. Of course this disk has SP2 and I have been keeping up with all MS updates.
