I am currently running Windows XP MCE 2005. I have setup 4 limited user accounts for everyone in my family and one administrator account for installing programs with. The problem is that some programs require administraor privlages to run. Can I setup full access for all users for individual programs?

Hi there...

If you have XP Pro you can change the permissions so that the Limited Accounts have full access to programs. You can do that by right clicking on the installation directory and then selecting Properties then the 'Security' tab. Then click 'Add' then 'Advanced' then 'Find Now' and scroll to the users you wish to add access to (pressing ctrl whilst selecting users will enable to highlighting of multiple users). Then click 'OK' then 'OK' again then put a tick in the 'Full Control' box under 'Allow' for each user then click Apply then OK.

You can do this with XP Home Edition but you will need to boot into Safe Mode first.

Hope that helps...if you can't see the Security tab, in Explorer, click Tools then Folder Options then the View tab, scroll to the bottom and uncheck 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)' then click Apply then OK :)

Or you could setup an Encrypted runas utility to solve the issue as well if you don't want to screw around with the permissions.

nickster_uk,

You would also have to open all registry keys used by the program.
It is also likely you would need some additional security tokens granted each user; see the discussion of using NTRIGHTS.EXE for this:

I am in favor of "Squashman's" outline for a workaround. Here is a RUNAS wrapper application written by MS-MVP Greg Palmer that works quite well and is easy and free to implement: http://www.palmersoft.co.uk/software/runasuser.asp

Thanks Bill.....I guess I must be lucky as I have 2 limited profiles on my pc and only 1 program requires me to change registry permissions in order for the program to run without a problem.

Have checked out that freeware runas program and it looks excellent....all the other programs of it's type that I have found have all been shareware :)
