Greetings all,

I have an issue... my friends business has 6 computers all workstations. there is 1 program that is shared off 1 of the workstations, everything else id sone locally alond with printers etc... The 1 program is the main one that keeps all the customer info, accounts etc... It is backed up weekly via cdrw.

We have been having a lot of issues when this 1 program is running with both the program and network the software manufacturer says it is because we are running the program off a workstation and not a server. I don't think that is the case and think they are trying to pass the buck for their crappy program.

What would you guys suggest for a 6 node network with only 1 shared program, individual dial up AOL, witgh only 3 printers?

Thanks

Thank you yes i am new.

Well We have 6 pc's 2 running win XP pro 4 running windows 98. we have a dedicated dial up line that is run to all of them allowing only one to connect at a time (not much need for internet) Each one has it's own MS Office etc... and savces their own documents and such on their own PC's. All PC's access 1 program which is loaded on a brand new p4 1.8 512mb ram PC. This program is the main one used to control all the customer info and activity. This program was DOS based but they pushed us to upgrade to the new windows version because they were not going to support the DOS one anymore.. Ever since we have had nothing but problems such as people dropping off the network, Accessing the program is sometimes impossable. it freezes etc.. right now the software mfgr is having us write down the errors the office ladies get but this has been going on for 2 months. They say it is because we are running the program on a workstation not a server!

There is 1 printer that the bills are printed on every month but every other PC has it's own printer. Everything runs into a hub which i am assuming is a 10/100 hub but i really do not know. I know when i upgraded everything worked fine. It is to the point that the boss is thinking of buying another program like this one: http://www.desertmicro.net/tour_Route_custmaint.htm

Can't i just buy a lynksys cable router and use that as the replacement hub? (i dunno if there is a switch in them) that way we can get internet asccess shared and may solve any problems with network traffic?
