I'm sort of a networking noobie but I just had a question; if i wanted to be able to access my files, set up a fairly basic webpage and or allow other people to download files, would just apache be the best thing as far as operating system? This will be running on my main computer so thats why I first thought of Apache.. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

I don't think of Apache as an operating system, but more as a web server. It would probably be Linux that you would be running as the OS. I don't have a lot of experience with Apache (I have set one web server up with it) but I have heard good things about it.

Apache is fine, but it's a lot more work than you might want to get involved in to get it all configured and running. It depends on the total scope of utilization you visualize for your incoming connections.
