Ok, so I recently (and successfully) built my own computer. Times have changed from the old cables that were used for my 1st computer 8 years ago.

I tried to install the Soundblaster Audigy card from my old computer into my new one... and thick smoke began to spew from my ventillation fan. It was the power cable that melted. Everything's okay though, and my new computer is restored to it's running state.

My question is, what happened? The sound card came with an adapter for the power supply (4 pin to Floppy sized 4 pin). Because the sound card came with a physical drive, like a cd player, for mic inputs and what not.

My Corsair 650w comes with a couple "floppy" sized inputs for power. They look exactly like that of the 8 year old Sound Blaster adapter. Should I try to plug it in using my PSU unit? Should I test it out on my old computer (disconnecting the floppy drive... never use it).

thanks

The front add-on panel should connect tho the sound card. The sound card should not be connected to the power supply directly under any circumstances. Putting power on lines not designed for it may invalidate your warranty and/or break your card permanently.

Thanks for the help folks.

I tried plugging it in through a different cable (the last one melted) and nothing happened. Which is a good sign. I've read the instruction manual thoroughly and it needs a floppy size power cable to opperate.

No smoke this time, which is good. But no device recognition from Vista = bad. I'll try and reinstall it to my old (original) computer and see if it runs. It's a very old card so I expected something to malfunction.

Audigy based cards never got a Vista driver written for them. If you want a sound card for Vista you would need a card based on X-Fi.

I must have been thinking of the original Audigy. Also if you look in the driver notes you will see the following:
DO NOT install this driver for Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit, Sound Blaster Audigy LS, Sound Blaster Audigy SE, or Sound Blaster Audigy Value.
