What is the difference between types of RAM, for example, I see these codes, what does that mean?

Kingston ValueRam DDR2 2GB (1GBx2) PC5300 CL5 (KVR667D2N5K2/2G)
Kingston ValueRam DDR2 2Gb 533Mhz
Kingston ValueRam DDR2 2GB PC5300 CL5(KVR667D2N5/2G)
Kingston ValueRam DDR2 2GB PC6400 CL6 (KVR800D2N6/2G)
Also, I what is the difference between DDR, SDRAM, SO-DIMM, SO-DDR, DDR2 and DDR3? Which should I use?

I might need a new motherboard or CPU, so I'd need a new set of RAM as well that would fit in. I'm not sure yet if they need to be replaced.

Is DDR3 much better than DDR2 or is there little difference in performance?

Doubtful that you would see a dramatic difference if you chose DDR3 over DDR2 and it is specific to the board. If you have a DDR2 board you cannot use DDR3 ram.

If you are really considering a new system build then I suggest you solve this thread and start a new one. Just ask questions re: best build within your budget. List what the pc will mainly be used for , i.e. video editing, gaming, general home use, any work related applications. List your existing components. You may be able to reuse some. Lots of people on this forum would be happy to point you in the right direction.
