Hello and welcome to TSF .

You may like to subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools located near the top of this page, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant email Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not (while in Safe Mode) be available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Downloads

1. Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later. Do not install if you are using the 64 bit version of windows. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_whichcpu.exe

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

The following is the alternate download location for CleanUp!. Please download the program from this link if the main link is out of service:

http://www.stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/CleanUp452.exe

2. Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

3. Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Do not run it now.

Show Hidden Files and Folders

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.

Fix

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

c:\secure32.html
.
_______________________________________________________________

SDFix.exe

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC, choose SAFE MODE.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.
______________________________________________________________

Cleanup!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:

Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
Do not logoff or reboot when prompted.

AVG Anti-Spyware

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Online Scan

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on
located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on
    then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Please provide the following logs with your next post:

Report.txt (from SDFix)
AVG Anti-Spyware
Panda Scan
HijackThis (A fresh one)

Please let me know about your systems overall behaviour .

Hello cdcargil

You have multiple issues that will take a few steps to address, so please stick with me patiently till the process completes.

Download
http://www.uploads.ejvindh.net/rustbfix.exe
...and save it to your desktop.

Double click on rustbfix.exe to run the tool. If a Rustock.b-infection is found, you will shortly hereafter be asked to reboot the computer. The reboot will probably take quite a while, and perhaps 2 reboots will be needed. But this will happen automatically. After the reboot 2 logfiles will open (%root%avenger.txt & %root%rustbfixpelog.txt). Post the content of these logfiles along with a new HijackThis log.

I am more then happy to be patient. I am serving in the Army on a deployment to Kosovo. My computer is my only lifeline to the outside world. So I need to make sure it is running and not taking the big crash on me.

Thanks for all the help.

Hello cdcargil  Good job!

Downloads

1. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop. Do Not run it yet.

------------------------------------------------------------

2. Please update AVG AS' definitions, and run a scan where I have placed it in this fix.

Run AVG Anti-Spyware
  • From the main screen, click on update, then click the Start
    update
    button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update
    successful")
  • select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware. DO NOT scan yet.

Fix

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

And BTW why should I have three srvchost running in my services?
I believe the file you are mentioning is svchost.exe. Here is something for you which should answer your doubts

What is the svchost.exe file?

Microsoft Windows executable file labeled as: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services". This is a required Windows file and is used to load needed DLL files that are used with Microsoft Windows and Windows programs that run on your computer.

This file is located in either the c:\windows\system32 or c:\winnt\system32 directories depending on your version of Windows and may also be located in the dllcache directory if present.

Why do I have multiple svchost.exe processes running in Task Manager?

Multiple svchost.exe files are loaded when a program needs to be grouped from other Windows services. This is a normal operation of Windows and it is common to see three or four svchost.exe in the Task Manager processes.

Hello cdcargil

P2P - I see you have P2P software your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine (BitLord) installed on will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

I can also see that you are using reverse engineered materials (cracks/keygens), apart from legal issues involved in using these, cracks or keygens mostly are malwares. So I suggest that you refrain from using these types of softwares in future.

Downloads

1. Please download System Repair Engineer and save it to your desktop. Extract the contents of the archive onto your desktop.

2. Download combofix from one of these locations:
**Save it to your desktop**

Do Not run it now.

3. I hope you still have SDFix onboard. If not, then please download it again and save it following the instructions I have already given in the post#3.

System Restore

To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

Turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

________________________________________________________________

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SvcManager] kernelex6.exe

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msasvc.exe
C:\Windows\System32\kernelex6.exe

_______________________________________________________________

SDFix.exe

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

________________________________________________________________

Combofix

Please run Combofix. Double click on the file combofix.exe saved on your desktop and follow the prompts and post the content of the log it produces with your next reply.
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

So with your next post please provide:

Report.txt from SDFix
Combofix.txt
HJT Log
SREng Log (Attach it)

Can you please tell me what exactly your Anti Virus reported? If you can not find it, then run another Virus Scan with Trend Micro (after completing the above steps) and post the location of and name of the Trojan it finds.

What p2p programs do I have? I understand the problems that come from P2P and cracks. But I dont remember installing any p2p software such as grockster, gnutella, limewire, or bearshare.

Reguardless of which, after finally getting rid of everything that is affecting my system, I want to know the single best peice of software that there is to protect my machine against malicious software. I dont mean to be fecitious, but isn't there something better then P-cillin?

Hello cdcargil

The P2P software that you have is BitLord and it is located at C:\Program Files\BitLord.

I can address your second question to protect you better in future, but before that I must ensure that your System is Completely Clean. And to ascertain that I must have all the logs/reports I asked for. No protective program can effectively be installed in a PC which is not completely clean.

Please perform all the above steps if you have not done that already and provide the logs.
