Search Engine Redirect suspect Virus/"untrusted connection" for gmail

3036 Views 9 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  sjpritch25
Hello,

I am working on a Dell Latitude c840 with Microsoft XP Professional. Usually I use firefox version 3.6.6 but occasionally I use Internet Explorer 8; the search engine redirect and inability to access gmail occurs on both browsers. I have run a few different malware/antivirus programs (independently, shutting down one when trying another) and none has found a threat that resolves this problem, and I fear delving into the registry myself. The gmail page that appears in firefox is:
"This Connection is Untrusted

You have asked Firefox to connect
securely to www.google.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.

Normally, when you try to connect securely,
sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are
going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.

What Should I Do?

If you usually connect to
this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is
trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.

Technical Details

www.google.com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed.
The certificate is only valid for 78-159-121-201.local

(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

I Understand the Risks"

I researched and though some say the usual cause for this problem is inaccurate date/time, I have checked and rechecked and there are no inaccuracies on the computer's date and time.

The redirect virus transports me to different websites appearing to be attack sites every time I click on a result from a search engine (I have tried Bing, and yahoo, as well as google). Cached pages appear to be unaffected in google.

Below are the required texts, attaced with the dds and GMER. I do not currently have access to a Windows Install Disc or Boot Kit, unfortunately, though I have backed up some important files on USB if necessary.

Welcome to TSF :)

Before i begin, i need you to uninstall 2 of the following 3 security programs Avast, McAfee, Trend. Having three installed and running will make your computer crash and my job much more difficult.

Download Combofix from this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" .
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Firstly, thank you so much for your speedy response on a weekend!! I have tried to delete Trend Micro but it is not listed under my add/remove programs window, and when I try to simply delete the program file under C:/ I am not allowed to delete "tmdshell.dll"

I have combofix downloaded; should I run it, so long as I make sure both trend and mcafee are disabled? Thank you!
Sorry, please disregard that, I have found a way to uninstall trend. Unfortunately, I believe things have escalated;

When running combofix as per the directions on bleepingcomputer, for some reason it turned off the internet prior to trying to download windows recovery console; therefore, I haven't the recovery console and the combofix program decided to continue on scanning. Likewise, the program looked like it was deleting some files, though I cannot remember what they were.

Lastly, my internet connection is now bust. I have tried repairing the connection, but the dialog box that comes up says "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:
Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed" and tells me to contact the guy who manages my network. !!

I was able to copy the combofix.txt to a usb device anyway, so here it is; sorry for all the trouble, and thank you for your patience!

Go to Start ---> Run ---> Type the following into the run box

cmd ----followed by enter

ipconfig /flushdns ---followed by enter

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt --- followed by enter.

Reboot your computer and let me know if you still can't get online.
I actually found a way to do just that without the run program! The internet is working perfectly, and I no longer have any problems with search engines or my gmail. Thank you so much!! :)
Before this thread is closed; Should I delete the quarantine folder created by combofix, or the folder "backenv"? Will the malware not be able to attack so long as it is in these quarantined files?
We will uninstall combofix

Go to Start ---> Run ---> Type the following ComboFix /uninstall and press Enter.

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Click the "More Options" Tab.
6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.
How to Create a Restore Point.
How to use Cleanmgr.
