Search engine links redirect on both browsers

1118 Views 14 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Ried
My current issue is that the links provided by Google, following a search, are nearly all redirect to other sites. At first, this had happened a few months ago, with the redirecting occurring once in a while. Today, nearly all links show up as a "183..." or "85..." IP address down on the status bar when I place the cursor over a link. I tried MalwareBytes in Safe Mode, with nothing detected. Although I mainly use Firefox, this issue also happens with IE. I also ran TDSSKiller, without any files being detected. PCTools' Registry Mechanic didn't do much, as I only used the free, basic version.

I think I have access to the Windows Install CD.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Additional information: I found that the redirected links occur when I use the Google search bar that's part of the browser frame. Once the links are provided, I searched for something else using the same Google web page, and the links from the new search are all fine. In short, it's the search engine bar. Not sure if this additional info helps, but I figured I would pass it along.

Again, thanks in advance for your time and your guidance.
Hello,

Who advised you to run ComboFix? Are or were you being assisted at another forum?
Thanks for taking a look at things, Reid. I have only posted to TechSupportForum for help.

I had seen ComboFix mentioned on a few forums and started to run it, then stopped running it after a minute or two as I examined the disclaimer about not running before someone tells you to. Hopefully I haven't screwed anything up beyond repair.

Thanks again for your time and your expertise.
Thanks. :)

Please proceed with running ComboFix. If it prompts you that an update is available, please allow it to do so.

Post the C:\ComboFix.txt when it has completed.
Reid, I tried running ComboFix, but it never progressed past the "Attempting to create a new Restore Point..." line. I let it run for ten hours with no changes. Suggestions?
Please try running it from Safe Mode with networking.

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account.
Thanks for the guidance, Reid. I was still having the same issue with Safe Mode with Networking, but it worked with Safe Mode. Attached is the log. Please let me know if I should try it again in Safe Mode with Networking. Thanks again!

You'll also notice that the antivirus programs were supposedly running. I tried ending the programs as well as preventing them from automatically loading at startup, but I had no luck in turning them off in Safe Mode. I checked the processes that were running, but nothing was showing up from the antivirus programs...
You're welcome. :)

Are you still getting redirected?
No redirection any longer! Excellent work, Reid! Thanks again (very, very much) for time, guidance, and expertise!
Good, and you're welcome, but I'd like for you to do one more thing for me.

It's important to run an online scan to search for any remnants that may be lurking. Please go to here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • If any threats were found, click the 'List of found threats' , then click Export to text file....
  • Save it to your desktop, then please copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

I was quite certain I had unchecked the "clean/fix found threats", but the list proved otherwise. I'll run it again after restarting to see if anything turns up again and will let you know.

I ran the ESET scanner again with no threats showing up after restarting my computer. Looks like things are good? Again, thanks much for your guidance.
You're welcome. :)

Great! If there aren't any more problems, we have some final housekeeping to tend to now. Please do not skip this step as it will implement important cleanup procedures, as well as reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point for you.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and look into the following free programs:

  • Microsoft Windows Update - Microsoft Windows Update
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.
    • SpywareBlaster is a preventative program. It sets flags in the registry to prevent the running of a specific list of bad spyware related ActiveX controls. It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

  • WOT, Web of Trust, As 'Googling' is such an integral part of internet life, this free browser add on warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. It is especially helpful when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
    • Green to go
    • Yellow for caution
    • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

  • Scan here OSI - Consumer - Products for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

  • BACKING UP YOUR REGISTRY
ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders System Restore unavailable by simple means. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

Vista/Windows 7 users - see this link for proper setup of Erunt Automatically Backup your Windows Vista Registry daily using ERUNT - The Winhelponline Blog

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
