Please do NOT buy Seagate until you like being ripped off.

For any DAO (dead on arrival) they want you to pay 1/2 the shipping costs ,which normally they are supposed to pay.

Companies like Intel are NOT doing this.

If anyone reads this please spread the word.

Seagate is increasing their profits this way and the end-user is paying for it.

This behavior is only recent ,since the company has been taken over by Maxtor.

An angry reseller ,who will NEVER sell seagate again.

seagate took over maxtor
as far as i know you have always had to pay the shipping back to them
if they accept it as a warranty claim the pay for the return
if they don't accept the warranty claim they send it back collect

Dai is spot on - there is nothing "sinister" about it at all. Freight on returns (to any company and for any goods) are at the customers' expense - very much standard business practice. I've had a number of dealings with Maxtor over the years and have nothing but praise for their service.

If you think about it, why would a company pay freight for a return? They are usually most accommodating when it comes to repairing/replacing an item and they generally pay the return freight. The company meets (and often exceeds) there statutory obligations. They are wearing the cost of replacement/repair/return shipping - why should they be penalised with the cost of returning the product to them?

Seagate (Maxtor) still has the best warranty by far with a 5 year warranty on retail drives. WD has reduced their warranty on retail box drives down to 1 year with the option to extend the warranty. Only their bulk or OEM drives offer a 3 year warranty.

Hi,

Just to chime in, I have always had to pay the shipping for RMA units that I ship back to Maxtor. They pay shipping back to me and that has always been normal business practice. Just for your info, between my two personal computers, I have 8 maxtor drives (both Sata and Pata drives) running and they have been excellent. RMA's are rare with these drives according to the experience I have had, and they have been excellent to deal with. I have also had very good experience with WD drives.

So I recken you never did business with Intel or Palm ,were in case of DOA the transport service (DHL,UPS,etc.) is picking up the goods at THEIR expense ?
This is what I call doiing honest business. Not the kind of business were you sell cheaper by letting the DOA victims pay for half of their shipping costs.
So you all feel very relaxed paying for return cost to japan, or taiwan while you have received a DOA when purchasing it from a dealer in Europe ?
NOT ME !

Then wake up and smell the coffee. And be warned on the next DOA you will receive.

Shipping cost 12€ for a 60€ drive ????? => That is why they want half of it to be paid by the consumer ! Pricetactics ,nothing else.

A little tail for you ... :
I work also for a BIG telecomcompany and let me tell you that on the last delivery of the desktops ,the contained harddrive (MAXTOR) had to be swapped for 4500 items. After having a big argument -in order to obtain free forensic tool ,because of their faulty test procedures- on the phone with the Paris director of maxtor, the guy tried to override me by sending me free samples at home ! Ridiculous.

You believe me or not ,that is your problem. Mine is to convince everybody to fight back against this type of bad salespractices.

Kind regards and thanks for the responses.

seagate drives here you pay the freight to sydney or drop them back at the store where you purchased them
they pick up the cost from there to the repair depot in singapore and the return of the drive
for DHL,UPS to be picking up the cost they would have admitted damage in transit was the cause

Then I would imagine you are a western digital customer as of now.
I might invest in an electrician to monitor for power fluctuations entering the building at this point.

And what power supplies are in these desktops? Some hard drives are more susceptible to inferior rail dips than others, and the same goes for inferior cooling that might be present in these machines.

Its not always black and white.
