I have 3 monitors. 5 days ago they all blacked out. After hours of messing with my computer (desktop, 2 years old), I finally got all three on. However, now they are all blacked out again and I can't even get one on.

Here is what I did: I checked all cables. I turned everything off for an hour, to allow for cool-down. I turned on my computer and got one monitor (had only one plugged in). Re-set power management options; disabled screen saver. Updated video card driver. Shut down again, plugged 2nd monitor in, turned on my computer. Both screens came up. (At this point, there was some intermittent success -- one would black out, I'd shut down again, give it a rest, turn it on, might or might not come on with both. Finally got both. Thus this was not an entirely linear process). Shut down again, plugged the third one in. Turned it all on. No screens at all. Gave up in frustration; turned it all off. Next day, turned it all on again, with the three monitors attached. Got all three monitors back. The order of the monitors was wrong (which one was primary etc) so had to switch that around.

Today, my monitors worked all morning, for about 6 hours. (I'm a commodities trader so I am moving between them a lot.) About 2p, I was working on my taxes and just getting directions about a tax form, and my system sort of freezes and I get a box: says something like, "Stop immediately or your system will crash. You have an error in your system. This is a serious error and could corrupt your operating system. Call Microsoft Tech Support immediately at this number." I cannot x out of this box or do anything, so I call the number (yes it struck fear into my heart!).

I get a guy from pcsolutionltd.com on the other end. He talks me through stuff, convinces me to give him access to my computer (after I try to grill him, after I try looking up his firm on BBB, etc), and shows me through the remote assist that I have 149 Windows drivers that show that they are "Stopped." He says I have a trojan and need to get these uninstalled and reinstalled immediately. Says I need my OS repaired, my system optimized, and a top-drawer anti-virus security. He itemizes and tells me it will cost $500!! (I have a heart attack at that point!). I just can't go for that. Surely there is a cheaper fix!

I also have Webroot on my computer -- I re-upped this just several days before the black out, which is why it did not occur to me that it was a virus.

So, my questions:
1) Do you agree with his diagnosis?
2) Have you heard of this company and do you think he was trying to scam me?
3) How can I fix my computer if I cannot even see the monitors? What do you think I should do to try to fix it, beyond what I have done? (I would add that I have an intermediate knowledge of computers - I am no expert.) THANK YOU.

I was going to look them up as well, but there is no point.

First, Microsoft will NEVER direct you to call another company/service provider. None of the MS OS errors that I've even seen even list a phone number to call. They provide information about the error and how to troubleshoot.

Having said that, your PC is very likely already infected and the number you called is involved in the scam.

Before doing anything else, start a topic here: Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help after reading this sticky: http://www.techsupportforum.com/for...-posting-for-malware-removal-help-305963.html

You may need to only connect a single monitor during this process. You may also need to boot into Safe Mode, that should eliminate any malware from running. If it also doesn't work in Safe Mode, you may have a hardware fault.

You can leave this topic open and direct the new topic to this topic for your full description of the problem. If your PC in not infected or after it is cleaned, we can continue to assist in this topic if more help is required.

Good luck.

Thank you for responding! Any ideas on how I can get at least one monitor to light up so that I can do what you are saying? Or is there a way to boot into Safe Mode on Win 10 before I have to depend on seeing something on a monitor? (BTW I am posting these messages from another computer.) A third question: Is there a way for me to check my network itself for viruses, which I could do from this laptop? (Could my home network itself be infected? I am telling my family to stay off of their computers.)

Connect one monitor to the motherboard, not graphics card and attempt to run malwarebytes anti-malware. Unplug the Ethernet cable or wireless so remote access is disabled. Most likely he added more malware while access was granted. This may be better moved in to the Spyware/ Malware removal section.

Please don't run anything to clean up your system as yet, leave it until you have completed following the instructions JimE posted for you, the security folks would probably prefer to see everything as is in order to better assist you.

Will do. I followed Jim's instructions. I am now in the process of getting hooked up to the motherboard. Great idea. I will post on Virus forum from here.

Here is where I am on this (sorry that last one got double-posted). Here is what I did:

1. Opened up my computer, unplugged all monitors, plugged one (VGA) directly into the motherboard. No success. Plugged second one (HDMI) into mobo, no success.
2. Took out video card. Plugged a monitor into the mobo and it worked (that was a relief to see!).
3. However, at this point I wanted to make an "emergency backup" of my files (I had backed up almost everything pretty recently but wanted to catch some work done in the last week or so). I cannot get past the screens that come up.

Here is what I get on the screen (Win 10):
"Choose an option:" Buttons: "Continue on to Win 10" (When I hit this, I just get back to the password screen and then this same screen), "Turn off your PC" (I did this just to give it a chance; eventually got back to this screen again); "Use a device - USB drive, network connection, or Windows recovery CD"; or "Troubleshoot" (apparently to do a system restore, get the command prompt, some other things).

Advise? Is it possible to make an emergency backup from this point? If so, what do I click on to do that? If not, that is ok. What would be the next step? Many thanks.

Quick addendum: I have an HDMI and a VGA monitor both plugged into the motherboard. Both work, same screen as mentioned above. (Had the videocard since Sept '15 so I could have the third monitor).
