Replaced hard drive in my Dell 8300 and reinstalled winxp home with sp3. Everything seems to work very good except when I try to install a very simple game it says not enough space on c drive . This is a 250 g hard drive, same size as the one I took out. The only thing on this drive at this time is the OS. I'm using this PC just for my older games that have always worked fine on this PC. First check to make sure it's not divided into partitions. Computer>C: What does it actually show?

Go to Start/Run and type diskmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Disk Management window, in the lower pane, is the drive where C: is installed have Unallocated Space to the right of C: Or is there another partition? Include a Screenshot of Disk Management window.

The PC in question is not hooked to the internet so I don't have a screen shot. Under disk management there is no unallocated space showing to the right of C

Since your disk is OK, what game(s) are you trying to install?

I have 2 dirt track racing games that only require 200 mb of space each , a number of hoyle board game disks , alley 19 bowling game , and a bunch of other older games that always worked fine on this pc. None of these games use large amounts of space or ram .

no problem there , I am going to wipe it clean and try reinstalling windows again, maybe something didn't load correctly the first time

Hello there ^^

Seems likely to me that your games are so old that their installers don't handle properly drive sizes above 2 GB. For example if they use a 32 bits signed integer to handle that value, it gets in the negative values every 2 GB.

Try copying files (or creating one with Dummy File Generator) to lower your free disk space by 2 GB (or even so it gets below 2 GB) and try installing again.
If it works, you can free up that space after installing the game (hopefully the game saving function doesn't suffer from the same issue).

I reformatted the drive and installed the OS again, same problem . I will try filling up the drive to reduce free space and see what happens. The drive I took out was also 250 g drive but it did have less free space when the games were installed originally.

Sounds like the problem is in the games as per post #15. After installing OS, did you run Windows Update?

I down loaded the bowling game onto a usb stick and it loaded ok and i can play it on this pc. One of the dirt track games installed in the pc ok but the others still say not enough space .. I may just load these games on usb sticks and play the from there. The OS is winxp SP3. the same system that these games previously worked on , so I am really confused as to what the problem is !!

Take a look at the game that did install vs. the ones that didn't. See if you can isolate the factor i.e. year of production or compatibility i.e. if some go back to Windows 95-XP and others start at say 98 and go through Vista or latter.

I partitioned the hard drive and created a 5g partition. all games loaded ok on the 5g partition. Thanks to all for the help !!!
