Have a look in the device manager and see if it shows any conflicts, another thing to try is disabling ALL running programs by your clock by right clicking on each in turn and select exit\close etc wherever you can, then tell the system to scan for hardware changes in the device manager and let it auto install what it finds, sometimes running programs can mess up installs, just make sure you come offline BEFORE dropping your firewall unless you have a hardware firewall or you will get an infection, also have you installed any SATA drivers ? maybe thats what it wants, see if any of this helps.
sata, pnp driver issues

I recently got a new Seagate SATA 200GB drive to add onto my Dell XPS400. It installed easily and after I hit F2-->Setup upon restart to turn on the SATA port it was hooked up to, it formatted easily. Windows recognizes the drive and it reads and writes fine, but every time i reboot it wants to install a driver for it. No driver can be found by me or Windows, though it does not affect functionality of the drive. Seagate website is of no help.
A few days later I installed a new Rosewill PCI USB controller card. Similar problem: Windows recognizes the new hardware but fails when attempting to install drivers (for a device that is supposedly plug-n-play). All the reviews I read for the card said they just installed it and that was it. Ever since these problems my Nikon D70 does not work as a USB mass storage device as it originally did, though another thumb drive works fine.
Please HELP! This is so frustrating! Thanks!

I think 8210GUY has hit it (he usually does) on the head. If you didn't load the Sata drivers with F6 when you loaded the OS, that is most likely IMHO the problem with the OS drive.

The Seagate drive shows up right below the original drive in the device manager, but with a yellow ! by it. Attempting to update the driver does nothing, as Windows cannot find the appropriate driver for whatever reason. When I install my USB controller card, it shows up under "other devices" in the device manager and has the same problem with installing the its driver(s). Well I suggest identifying the motherboard and installing the sata drivers, with luck that will cure your drives problem.
Your card may not be as easy, have you been to the makers site and downloaded the latest drivers ?
But specific info is required to do this, I suggest getting >>>Everest<<< and running that to find out, you can click on the highlighted info which brings up links to drivers\info etc, click on the drivers link and it will take you to the page for that product, you just need to navigate to the exact model and driver you require using the info from Everest to guide you, see if that helps.

on mine i did not have to load a sata driver windows already had them,but i had to load the raid driver called ITE and configure the bios for the drives to run as ide not raid
Thanks for all the help so far, folks. I went to the Intel site but could not find the specific controller card and thus could not find the appropriate driver. I have the Intel 82801 GR/GH SATA AHCI controller. Btw that Everest app is pretty cool.
I got my Dell new in March 2006. I found drivers on the Dell site, but their release dates are months before I ordered my pc. Any harm in installing them?
you should not need to install any drivers
check in the bios that the operating system controls plugnplay is enabled
on most systems it is disabled by default

how would I go about changing that setting in the bios?
in the ami bios go to advanced by clicking on the tab at the top
click on the plug and play operating sytem entry and in the box that pops up click on enabled and press enter
then save and exit the bios
