I am trying to get an older computer working again. 2004ish Dell Dimension 4700 Microsoft Windows XP. Crashed on the kid while he was playing a game and we haven't been able to get it going since. I can open it in safe mode only. Otherwise, it just stays on the Windows Start Up page. I have tried to restore it to an earlier point in time, before the crash, several times and it didn't work. Also tried to start it with F8 key, no go. Wondering just how bad a problem this is and what steps I can take to fix it.
Thanks,
aKandy

Boot into Safe Mode. Go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter. The Command Prompt window appears (DOS). Now type a Y and manually reboot the computer. the Check Disk utility will run at next boot up and try and fix any file errors. Also download the ISO image for Drive Fitness Test in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. And boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD.
