Folks,

I have a Dell XPS15 which showed a S.M.A.R.T hard drive failure, so I contacted Dell and they agreed to replace it. Windows was working fine and booted no problem. I formatted the hard drive and re-installed windows, but when I ran the PC Checkup again the HDD was passed all checks. ***!

Dell are due to collect the laptop in the next day or so, but I don't know if this is now necessary as all the tests passed after a re-install of windows. I don't want to be without my laptop unnecessrily if the drive is ok.

Can the S.M.A.R.T test be wrong? Does this monitor the HDD over time or is it just checked when the test is run.

Thanks for any help.

Smart is self monitoring by the drive itself at the physical level. It simply reports the values it has accumulated over it's operational life. Those values cannot be cleared or reset by the OS. At the simplest level, the Software looks at those values and makes a determination if there is an issue. If there was an issue, formatting the drive could resolve them if a full format was done by Vista or Windows7 and the error was found in pending bad sectors. To verify, download HDDScan from HDDScan and post the smart test results.

Not that I know of. I carry it in my bag in a laptop sleeve, but it's never been dropped. Do you think I should cancel the collection of the laptop from Dell and use away at the laptop and HDD as it is?
