Hi, I just registered to ask this question;

I have an Acer Aspire G7700 which consists of 2 GeForces 9600gt (512MB), not sure but can somebody confirm. They have an SLi Bridge and for the past few months I thought both worked simultaneously to give me 1GB of GFX memory, but the other day I was running GTA IV and my game told me I only have 512MB to use in GFX and checked my system settings and saw only one card showing, how do I make both of them to work to double my gfx power?

Thanks for your posts in advance!

Even if you did get them to run in SLI, the video RAM does not stack. You will still only have 512mb of video ram.

Try to right click on your desktop, and see if there is an option called nVidia control panel in the list.
If there is, open it and go through the categories on the left until you see something like this or something that says 'maximize 3D performance'.

If you DON'T have that option, make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

Downloading the drivers as we speak, what do you mean by they will only stack up to 512MB each card is 512MB surely I'd get more Video RAM

Each card takes a turn rendering a frame. Which means if one card is maxed out while trying to render the other will be in the same boat when it is its turn. You will most likely experience micro stuttering since one card by its self can barely handle the game.

Only the gpu power of each card would combine , not the memory.

If your interested in a gpu upgrade post the make and model pc your using (or the make and model motherboard) , the rest of your specs , and the power supply make and model.

Graphics Card Update

Processor - intel Core 2 Quad processor @ 2.83GHZ
Ram - 5GB DDR2
Motherboard chipset - Nvidia 780i SLI
Graphics card(s) 2x GeForce 9800 (512Mb each)
PSU - 750W

My current card can hardly cope with GTA IV, also I don't have much money to dish out.

What do you advise, I want to get a good card that can cope with skyrim etc, also is it easy to remove the two cards and the SLI bridge so I can resell the cards for a higher budget

We can't recommend a gpu if we dont even know if your power supply is decent quality or not. We only recommend cards if we're sure they will not fail due to the psu.

If you want to upgrade, try out the Radeon HD 6790 (not 6970). It's about $130 and I can play just cause 2 maxed out on 1080p and usually get about 50 fps. It's a great gpu for the price. I am playing bf3 on high on 1080 and skyrim on high on 1080. Make sure that your psu has at least 1 pci-e six pin plug as this gfx card requires them. I have a 600w corsair gs600 and it works perfect!

The motherboard is an nvidia based motherboard which could easily have driver conflicts with ati hardware so I wouldn't recommend this in any fashion.

True. Well the 550ti is the nvidia equivelant of that card. Around the same price too. I would suggest an upgrade. For $130 you can get a very good mid grade card that will handle anything on the market; not maxed out but better than any of them look on console. If I can't play it max, it plays very well on high; like 35-50 fps, well.

We need to know the Brand & Model of the PSU to recommend any particular GPU.
Using a low quality/underpowered PSU will only result in problems and possible damage.

£70 would get you an HD 6770 (on sale) or maybe a GTS 450. I'ld stick with the pair or 9600's.
