Ok, here's the deal. Yesterday, my HP Printer mysteriously quit working. I checked all connections, and made sure the power was on and all that.

That didn't solve it, and it didn't show up in the control panel either.

Now I dragged out my old Lexmark Z45 which is USB as well, and Windows does the "Found New Hardware" deal, and at the end I get a message: RPC server is unavaliable. So its not the USB or the printer but something else

1) Why is it trying to do a Remote Procedure call?

2) Is there a way to get my printer working again?

I actually figured it out.

In some fit of stupidity, I turned off a windows service, which caused a chain reaction that led back to the printer service.

Wow...

Thanks anyway!
