Hello...

WinXP Home machine stopped normal functions recently.

When I right click anything in windows the system hangs. I either have to logoff/back on to resolve the hang, or play the fun game of stopping explorer.exe. I can right click in applications (e.g. Outlook) without problems. But right clicking on anything in Windows Explorer, Desktop, etc. causes the hangup.

I have scanned the pc for viruses. All normal functions of the pc seem to be unaffected (other than right clicking on objects).

It is a rather vague problem, so searching MS's KB is rather futile. Anyone out there have any advice, or can point me in a place to start researching the problem?

Thanks up front,

Jim

I have noticed in the event log

I have tried setting permissions with winobj (I am administrator)
but the changes do not take.

My son's Home edition of XP has the same problem as my XP pro version.
I have searched for Hours on MS site nothing.

My problem only occurs while right clicking on the root of any drive local or mapped. Folder are ok.

We boldly go where I have not gone before...

I have used some of my best resources, and the best I can tell you is, you problem has something to with your security settings, specifically your "named objects" auditing file.

I have Googled,Yahoo'ed, Tech Net'ed, etc, and I get stuff that might as well have been in German (and a lot of it was).

Maybe, if you go to security, you can follow this little lead. Obviously, both your and your son's boxes are configured the same way.

Sorry I couldn't give you Step1, 2, 3...

I have found that some simple cleaning process will either eliminate the problem or lessen the freez up.
1) try disk cleanup on C: drive
2) run disk defrag
3) run disk error checking

I had a similar problem and came across this post. The problem with mine was something to do with Roxio EasyCD creator 5 - setting the system to the restore point just before this fixed the problem. Hopefully this might help someone else in the future.

I ran across this problem in about 12 other forums. I wanted to share my solution there (don't know if it is the answer for everybody, but I hope so), but some of these forums make you jump thru so many hoops, just to register and post! Jeez.. Anyway, I checked my right-click context menu, and there was my old friend (drumroll please) SpySweeper. As soon as I chucked this *astard into "remove programs" hell, all was well again. I had this problem for two weeks now, god it feels good to be able to right-click again!
