OK, pinging (or lack of) resolved by disabling firewall on desktop. Still cant access desktop files that are ALL set to share. Anyone?

Basically I bought a new laptop and router to add to my baby network (that was/is running fine)
Do you think I can share files? Nup. Can share ADSL access to internet, Desktop can ping all. Laptop can only ping old '98 printer server/fax.
laptop knows network is there, I can see "xxxx" when trying to add network place.
I have even removed Norton (NIS) in case it was firewall (disabling didn't do the trick. Hopefully I am safe behind WiFi router firewall.
Is there a "hijack this" for networking?

Now I've done it!
When trying to add network Place (after bright idea about dissing Firewall) I not only get "xxxx not accessible", but salt is rubbed in with"No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can handle"!! :4-dontkno
