so, at some point I want to upgrade my win 7 to win 10, but I am not ready for that yet, and not exactly sure when I will be ready.

Essentially, I want to upgrade to win 10 once I get a SSD. Then I can just do a complete fresh install.

But I am not sure when I will get the ssd. It could be tommorow, or in 6 months from now..

My worry is that the upgrade 'deal' will no longer be valid by the time I upgrade my PC.

So is there a way to 'reserve' a key, so that when I am ready, I can install it on my own time?

I plan on downloading win 10, and burning it to a bootable dvd, so I can have a physical copy.. But that's not the issue, I just want to make sure I have a [legit] valid key.

thanks :)

You have until July to upgrade to 10 for free, after which you'll have to pay. No, you can't reserve the upgrade for a period later than that.

If the SSD is the only thing holding you back, you don't have to wait. You can install a fresh copy of 10 on your current HDD and use your Windows Seven key to activate it, then when you get the SSD you can simply clone your system to it.

Hi Michael

You have until July 29, 2016 to install Windows 10 at no charge. After that, Microsoft might/might not charge for upgrades. As of today (Feb. 25, 2016) Microsoft still plans to end the free upgrade period on July 29, 2016.

You could always keep you old drive as an emergency fall-back. Microsoft allows "downgrading" if the newer version of Windows proves too troublesome. So long as you use your previous Windows on the same computer, that license complies with the one-computer license.

Cheers.

[late edit: oops.. looks like two of us were typing at the same time! ... Well, I am a bit older and slower myself...]

Ok that is good to know, I hopefully should have an ssd by then.

There is a few reasons why I am not upgrading right away - I have a fairly old system, and I am trying to get every ounce of power out of it. I am worried that windows 10 might degrade its performance in some areas, particularly with loading/startup times. Also, my hard drive is practically full. Its only 500gb and I strain to keep more then 40gb free at any given time. I am not exactly sure how big win 10 is, but I am assuming its bigger then win 7..

So Ive been putting it off, while trying to upgrade other parts of the PC. (CPU, fans, RAM, video card, hard disks, etc)

Thankyou tho. I didn't see the date on the windows website teh last time I checked it out.

Bear in mind that the windows 10 license is an OEM type, valid only for the computer it was originally installed on. So if you later upgrade the board and CPU, you'd eed a new license.

Try running the w10 upgrade tool to see how well yours will work with w10
