Replacing Motherboard OS Re-installation?

830 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Tyree
My motherboard may be toast and I have looked around for the exact model. If I simply swap them like for like, what can I expect to have to do? Will I need to re-install the OS? Will I need to flash the BIOS, if so how? Will I need any special goo for the CPU and heatsink? Thanks in advance for all your help!

Hi pegbeard,

Please post your computer specs so we can help you further troubleshoot your computer issue. Are you sure that the problem lies on the motherboard? I recommend double, triple checking just to make sure. What is the exact problem of the computer?

To answer your question, if you replace the computer motherboard with the exact same model, most likely you will need to perform an In-Place upgrade(Windows Repair for Windows Vista) on your computer. I recommend Artic Silver for really good Thermal Paste between the cpu and heatsink. Artic Silver will definitely help cool the cpu pretty good.
