Sorry if this has already been covered but I would appreciate some advice.

Soemtiem ago I built a computer and used a M2N-MX SE mobo, at the time I installed an AMD Athlon 64*2 Dualcore processor 2500mhz. I believe it has gone wrong so am trying to replace it I bought an AMD Athlon II multicore processor but the mobo won't see it.

Does this mean I have bought the wrong type of CPU I thought I'd carefully checked but technology moves on so fast. Whilst I am good with things technological I sometimes forget to move with the times (until something goes wrong)

I would really apprecaite any help you can give me

Kind regards

you need to update the bios for the cpu to work. You will have to install the old cpu back in and download the bios then flash the bios before installing the new cpu.

what problems were you having with the original cpu? CPUs very rarley fail.

Thanks for your response - my original problem was complicated it was problem with Windows (say no more), so I tried to reinstall Windows & my machine kept switching itself _ I've checked the memory, hard disk (been formatted but not as a boot disk - do I need to do that), CD ROM, and all that's left is the mobo or processor - I wondered if the CPU might be overheating - I can get into the BIOS OK and I have flashed it, with the old one, I don't actually believe it is the CPU and am now thinking it may be the motherboard.

I am also now trying to load Linux ( I am an ex Unix user ) as I thought it might be Windows?? - the computer just switches itself on and off again.

I may have answered my own question but thanks anyway -I may try flashing the BIOS again

Kind regards

sounds more like a power supply issue. If you can get into windows look at your voltages and temperatures and post them back on here.

for the new cpu you will need the latest BIOS revision and make sure you put thermal paste on the cpu before attaching the heatsink or that it has a thermal pad.

you dont need windows installed to be able to go into the bios. just switch the pc on and when it says press del or press f2 to enter setup or enter bios press what it says and find your temps and voltages and post them on here please.

If you were to attach a hdd to the pc with windows on it you would have to do a repair installation of windows and install your motherboard drivers disk.
