I'm helping a friend put in a new stereo this weekend, and he's got an older Alpine unit that is embedded in one of those 1 DIN sheet metal bracket things that seems to require a tool for removal.

I've seen factory removal info online for the Hondas, but this doesn't appear to apply to aftermarket units. What do I need to look for to pull this radio out? A universal removal tool? Find the right metal tabs with a flat head screwdriver? A special Alpine radio tool?

Any suggestions are really appreciated.

Alpine has special "keys" that slide down the side and unlock the unit.

heh, what i use is a pair of butterknives.

i just slide them in, and then give them a hell of a good shove.

then it allows the latches to move aside, and let the deck slide out.

for what it's worth, when you buy a stereo that comes with that rack, they supply the two "tools" you need.

i say "tools" because they are just flat peices of metal.
