Hi..Recently curiosity got the better of me ...I had an Asus 1156 socket M/B ..the socket was clearly irrepairable so I asked a friend if he knew how to remove the socket..well I was told a heatgun would do the job ..the same heatgun type painters use for removing paint ...
Well it worked (kind of) but in trying to prize the socket off it broke into several pieces so my experiment was unsuccessful...it also lifted tracks on the circuit of the M/B....??????
SO
I wonder if anybody has prized off a socket and if so how did they do it....

I am wondering if a tool like a hot wire/knife can be made that could be pulled slowly underneath the socket and break the solder balls that hold the socket to the M/B...If the wire/knife tool could be made to heat up to a determined temperature ...
Any comments would be appreciated..Hk

Probably not readily available. You might make do with a smaller hot-air station (around $200). You'd also need to find stencils for placing the solder, and hot-air solder paste. You can probably find those through DigiKey or Newark electronics.

Making sure all those pins solder down would be a nightmare though. Unless you're planning to do multiples, the cost of equipment will be more than the replacement cost on most boards.
