Remove Bad Startup!

686 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  jamiemac2005
If my friends WinXP goes into standby mode, it will try and re-start from a failed attempt at Windows install. I can see diffrent boot lines in the MSCONFIG, but can't remove them. Is there a way to have only the default boot available?

So when you start-up it standbys?

Firstly boot in safe-mode to avoid other boot options[the program thats booting may be protecting the registry entries that are to do with startup (tap F8 on boot until the options screen comes up and choose Safe Mode)...

MSConfig has changed in vista so i'm not sure what you can see in it but i'm sure theres tabs and one of them is "Boot" or "General" Which there's a few radio buttons under asking how to boot, i'm sure you can use them?

If not then the registry entries involving startup are:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can try delete them directly from there?
(Always backup your registry before making modifications!)

Cheers,
Jamey
