Hi-

I am trying to use remote login across the internet to get to my home computer from work (I keep leaving key files at home). When I go the file sharing window in System Prefs and select Remote Login below the green radio button it says "To log in to this computer type ssh [email protected]".

However, I read somewhere that these 192.168 IP addresses do not work over the internet. Does anyone know how I get the real name/IP address of my computer?

You have to find the address your ISP is assigning to your modem, and then set your modem, and router if you have one, to do port forwarding. The only problem with this is every time your modem connects, as well as periodically during use, your IP address of the modem changes, unless you are paying for a static IP. Apple's Mobile Me service has a way around this with their Back to My Mac service, but you have to be paying for Mobile Me. Now, I did run across a site that was working on bringing a form of the Back to My Mac service out for free, but I have no idea if they got it to work or not. Some Googling will be your best option to find it.

There may be another thing you ca do, but I don't know it.
