Remote Desktop on XP

I have two computers that both have 1 GBLAN. I want to connect one of these as a second computer so it can be operated with the same keyboard, mouse and moniter as my mail computer. It will be in a close physical proximity to my main computer and my main also uses standard dial-up modem. Could I connect these two computers together just using the LAN connectors directly between the two computers, or would I need to use a wired or wireless router? I would rather not if I don't have to. This would be by using the Remote Desktop that XP has.

If they are in close proximity why not try a KVM monitor/keyboard/mouse
switch. I have two computers on the same bench with only on monitor, keyboard and mouse. I hit scroll lock twice and it switches to the other computer. So no the keyboard and mouse control that computer as well as the monitor display of the other computer. I love it! It works fantastic and saves me much space. I believe I bought it for about $20 bucks on e-bay. Check out the link below.

I would do it this way way before remote desktop or VNC. To use the net just get a phone jack hup and connect the second computer to the phone hub. You could now use both on the net.

Good luck
