Remote desktop connection in XP

2127 Views 12 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  nickster_uk
Hi Guys I need some help here. I want to connect mine and my mates system through remote desktop connection in Xp. I have done all the steps but still when i give connect I keep getting this error message

I am on a home network so my local IP is something like 192.162.1.3. My mate and myself are not on same LAN. Hes also on a home network. To connect I had typed in his Internet static IP which was something like
211.28.xx.x. I tried using VNC but even that doesnt connect. Is it something with the firewall in the router? If yes how can i overcome it?

Thanks in advance..

Hi whoami..

have you tried using your external IP as the connections addresses?

Also, you both may need to forward ports in your routers (3389/3390 I think??)
hey thx nickster for the quick reply, i dont actually how to do port forwarding through router.. .need to know that .. that just might do the trick..
No probs...

Check out this link as it should have all you need to know :)
sure, ill just go through the site and come back if i et stuck somewhere..thx
Hi nickster, I tried with port trigger not port forward. VNC uses port 5800,5900. Using port trigger it successfully sends packets to my mates external ip, but i cant seem to connect using VNC or remote desktop in XP.

What could be the problem now? It says connection timed out in VNC and the same error mesage as before with Remote desktop... :sigh:
Ask your mate if he has forwarded ports in his router.
Yes he has, infact i went there personally and did it..

PS: I like the way you set up your web page
Hmmm so what ports have been open on both machines?

Also, check that the following services are set to automatic and are running on both machines:

Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Terminal Services

Plus when attempting the connection, please try the following:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
netsh interface ip show tcpconn
- Click OK

Post back on the details please...feel free to use screenshots if need be.

Hope that helps..

p.s Thanks for the feedback on the site :)

hi nick.. i didnt want to use port trigger, did it manually just to make sure the required ports are actually open. Did a bit of reading to do this on the router... Just confused on this part but first ill show you the screenshot

The server IP address box .. isnt it my local ip its asking for?? Because i have set it up that way. I have set it for VNC(ports 5500-5900) . It should be the same for Remote desktop also isnt it except for the ports right?. I want to try both VNC and remote desktop thats why..

@nick - Also, check that the following services are set to automatic and are running on both machines:

Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Terminal Services

How to do that? need some guidance there. When attempting connection, ill do what you said and post screenie if possible... thx

Hi whoami...

ok, I'm assuming you have forwarded TCP port 3389 as well as the VNC ones in your router??

To check those services I listed in the earlier post, try the following:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
services.msc
- Click OK
- Scroll down to:
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Terminal Services
- Note their status and startup type and post back please

Also, is your friend sure he has everything set up correctly from his end (ports forwarded and services)??

Also...do you have a software firewall as well as the hardware firewall?
