I get a blue screen telling me that "a problem was detected and windows was shut down to prevent damage to the computer. The problem seems to be caused by the following file: partmgr.sys page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" Later on the screen it says:

Technical Information

*** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFC7464AB, 0X00000000, 0XFC7464AB, 0X00000000)

*** partmgr.sys - address FC7464AB base at FC74400, DateStamp 00000000

At other times, the install process will continue until it asks to partition the c: drive

Screen shows 'unpartitioned space 9586 MB. Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 at atapi {MBR]. when I type "C" to create a partition, it takes me to the next screen, and then back to the previous one. Therefore, I cannot install windows because I can't partition the drive

is it saying anyting about VXD? I normally find the problem is a video driver but a couple of times I did another clean install and it fixed the corrupted installation.

Was it a clean install (all programs were deleted when rebooting)?

Yes, it was a clean install. I can't seem to get a read on the hard drive. If I boot off the floppy, I can't fdisk or format the c:\ drive. I'm starting to think that the problem may be the drive or the HD controller. This is in a Dell Insiron 4000 system with a 10GB HD

Make sure you have the bios set to First Boot Device Floppy...or CDROM...whatever you are using. During installation your Cdrom will move up one letter...if it is normally D:...it will be E:

oops...sorry...I didn't see the rest of your first post..brb

This is XP correct? Go to www.blackviper.com for pictured instructions on installation. I'm not sure if a Dell recovery disk would be any different. You will need to delete the previous partition (click key L and D during this process...you'll see it in the pictures)...and then make a new partition. Then you can install the OS...you don't need to fdisk. If you want to fdisk, blackviper has pictured instructions for that too.

Hi,

My hard disk crashed so I am trying to install Win XP on the new blank hard disk. I get exactly the same blue screen that you got saying:

"a problem was detected and windows was shut down to prevent damage to the computer. The problem seems to be caused by the following file: partmgr.sys page_fault_in_nonpaged_area"

The Technical Information is exactly the same also:

*** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFC7464AB, 0X00000000, 0XFC7464AB, 0X00000000)

*** partmgr.sys - address FC7464AB base at FC74400, DateStamp 00000000

So I searched the web for the above text and found your thread. So I am wondering how did you resolve the problem as it seems to be exactly the same as mine. I would be grateful for your advice.

Thanks and regards,

Frank Stewart
