Hello,
Last night out of the blue my friend's lenovo laptop (core 2 duo, 2GB RAM, Windows Vista Basic) began freezing at startup. I tried running system restore from the Lenovo Care Rescue and Recovery software included and after that began getting a blue screen on startup saying:
STOP: C9999218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SAM
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable

Collectring data for crash dum...
Inistializing disk for crash dump...
Etc.

Then the computer tries to reboot only to return to the blue screen.

Any ideas what I can do, short of restoring the computer to factory conditions?

(I am able to "rescue" - ie find and copy to a USB drive - files from the hard drive using the Rescue and Recovery Console.)

Thanks!

H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
http://www.carrona.org/memdiag.html (read the details at the link)
http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html (read the details at the link)

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: http://www.carrona.org/malware.html (read the details at the link)

Also, try running Startup Repair to see if that will fix the startup options.
